After School Elementary Tutor in Oakland

About the Position:

Aspire Education (https://aspireeducation.org/) is excited to partner with Girls Inc to provide after school tutors for Bella Vista Elementary. We are seeking an in-person elementary tutor with strengths in math and reading to support K–5th grade students. The tutor will work with small groups (up to five students each), delivering engaging, student-centered instruction that builds skills in math and reading while fostering motivation and confidence. This is a part-time employee role for 3-6 hours a week from January 12 through the end of May 2026. Additional opportunities for qualified tutors may be available through Aspire Education.

That’s why we serve students on a sliding scale and partner with dozens of nonprofits to design custom programs for underserved youth—from math courses that prepare young adults for careers in construction to test prep courses that help first-generation college students succeed.

Job Description:

Schedule: 3-6 hours a week, Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays from 3:30-4:30pm, with a possibility it can extend to 2 hours a day, Monday, Tuesdays, Thursdays 3-5pm

Dates: January 12-May 30, 2026

Pay Range: $35-45/hour

The tutor will be responsible for developing a curriculum tailored to the students’ needs and providing homework support. The tutor will lead group sessions and should demonstrate strong classroom management skills. They must be sensitive to the diverse backgrounds of the students and use an engaging teaching style that fosters motivation, participation, and a supportive learning environment.

Job Responsibilities:

● Teach and tutor small groups of up to five k-5th grade students in an engaging, interactive, and student-centered way.

● Deliver group lessons using curriculum materials; adapt instruction based on student needs and data.

● Create engaging, tailored lessons or activities when students do not have assigned homework.

● Adapt teaching strategies to support students with varying grade levels, learning styles, and academic needs.

● Monitor and track student progress throughout the program, including by recording

session notes in Aspire’s web-based system after each session.

● Communicate regularly with Aspire staff and YMCA/Downer staff regarding attendance, engagement, and growth.

● Foster a supportive and motivating learning environment that promotes confidence and

curiosity.

 

Required Qualifications:

● Ability to reliably commute to Bella Vista Elementary three days per week for in-person

tutoring sessions.

● Minimum 2 years of group tutoring or teaching experience, including at least one year with k–5th grade students.

● Bachelor’s degree or current enrollment in a degree program (education or related field

preferred).

● Excellent communication, interpersonal, and classroom management skills.

● Bilingual in Spanish and English

● Flexible, reliable, and able to adapt to a dynamic after-school environment.

● Comfortable creating engaging activities and adjusting instruction for diverse learningneeds.
