Transitions Center Assistant Principal

Position Title: Transitions Center Assistant Principal / Transition Coordinator
Classification: Administrative / Non-Bargaining
Responsible To: Executive Director of Special Education and the Principal of the Transitions Center
Terms of Employment: One (1) full-time, 220-day position
Salary: $91,310 – $95,933
Compensation: Competitive package, commensurate with education and experience. Two-year contract with annual review and evaluation. Includes health, dental, vision, life, and long-term disability insurance.

General Summary of Position

Under the direction of the Executive Director of Special Education and the Principal of the Transitions Center, the Assistant Principal / Transition Coordinator provides leadership in the administration and management of the SISD Transition Grant, Transition activities, Special Education Programs, and all activities adjunct to Special Education.

The Assistant Principal / Transition Coordinator manages Special Education instructional staff, including evaluation of teachers and support staff, and provides supervision and oversight of the School to Work Team, including shared MRS staff. The position ensures programs and services comply with special education rules and Transition Grant requirements and that student IEPCs are legally and correctly implemented.

Additional responsibilities include oversight of curriculum and assessment relating to Special Education, maintaining compliance with state and federal laws, and delivering high-quality customer service to staff and the public.

Essential Job Responsibilities

Administer Special Education Programs and Services per Federal, State, and ISD mandates.

Develop and review curriculum relating to Students with Disabilities.

Develop comprehensive Special Education programs and services for students aged 0–26.

Develop and maintain Special Education graduation requirements.

Implement Transition requirements for Special Education.

Develop and implement pre-referral and referral systems.

Develop needs assessments and provide in-service training for Special Education and transition.

Collaborate with Saginaw MRS office to maintain annual Cash Match/ICTA agreement.

Assist Special Education Teachers with selection and dissemination of materials for students with disabilities.

Work with local district AP/Transition Coordinators, teachers, and School to Work staff to develop supports, resources, and professional development.

Review and submit authorizations for School to Work services for reimbursement.

Track School to Work service data across Saginaw County, including referrals, job clubs, student services, and local business partnerships.

Coordinate all aspects of the SISD Transition Grant, including:

Submission of required reporting, including State Indicators 13 & 14

Development and implementation of county-wide grant goals

Assist the Transitions Center Principal with administration and evaluation of teaching and paraprofessional staff, monitoring attendance, legal compliance, improvement plans, and professional development.

Monitor and report all Special Education data to the Principal, including attendance, performance indicators, graduation data, suspension/expulsion data, and child accounting.

Monitor and report transition data, resources, and training to the Executive Director of Special Education.

Administer the student code of conduct and discipline of students with disabilities, emphasizing positive behavioral, social, and emotional development; implement bullying/harassment procedures.

Provide administrative oversight of the Transitions Center budget and Transition Grant budget.

Oversee IEPs for students assigned to local programs, including attending and conducting IEPs and ensuring procedural compliance.

Continuously monitor and evaluate Special Education programs for compliance and quality.

Complete all required Special Education reports at the ISD, State, and Federal levels.

Maintain accurate records of professional activities.

Serve as liaison with school staff, community agencies, and professional organizations.

Attend required conferences and professional development as assigned.

Maintain professional competency through ongoing training and participation in professional organizations.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Master’s Degree.

Administrator certificate, or ability to obtain within three (3) years.

Full approval in at least one Special Education area.

Three years of successful Special Education practice, administrative experience, or combination thereof.

Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Ability to work effectively as a team member in a collaborative environment.

Ability to meet the needs of the assigned district and its residents.
