Congregational Organist Pianist

Primary Duties

Prepare, practice, and perform the necessary musical portions of the Sunday morning worship service.  In addition, prepare and perform for special services throughout the church year, attend rehearsals as accompanist for the adult choir, accompany ensembles/soloists/etc. as coordinated with music coordinator and/or pastors.

Performance Duties

  • Communicate with pastors and music coordinator regarding music that supports the worship theme and elements.
  • Select and prepare music for the solo portions of the Sunday morning worship service.
  • Prepare pre-selected congregational singing accompaniments.

Instrumental Duties 

  • Determine organ registrations, set them at the organ console, and practice them for effectiveness.
  • Maintain manual and pedal dexterity by regular practice on the organ and sanctuary piano. 
  • Select new organ and piano compositions to meet the special and changing needs of the services. 
  • In coordination with the church office and music coordinator, stay on top of regular maintenance of the organ and sanctuary piano by qualified and trained professionals.  

Rehearsal Duties

  • Rehearse and accompany the adult choir during all rehearsals, Sunday morning worship services, and other occasional special events.
  • Rehearse with other musicians, ensembles, or soloists, and prepare for all such rehearsals in consultation with the music coordinator and pastors.
  • Consult with pastors for weddings and funerals as needed. 
  • Collaborate with the audio technicians to establish proper balance of all keyboard instruments to ensure helpful and effective musical balance in worship.  

Knowledge/Skill Requirements

  • Experience in worship music performance
  • Familiarity with a wide variety of music genres
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to work effectively with people of all ages
  • Ability to collaborate with music coordinator, groups of musicians, and pastoral staff
  • Demonstrated proficiency in playing pipe organ, piano, and electronic keyboards 
  • Experience with/aptitude for playing digitally enhanced pipe organs is a plus

Compensation and Benefits

Annual stipend

Four Sundays off annually 

  • Please notify the pastor and music coordinator at least 4 weeks in advance of an absence, when possible, so a substitute can be arranged.
  • In the event of an emergency absence, the pastor and music coordinator should be notified as soon as possible. 

Organizational Structure  

The Organist/Pianist reports to the Pastor of Worship and Administration.

The Organist/Pianist is welcome to attend and contribute as an ex-officio member of Expressions Commission. 

An annual review will be conducted by the chairperson of the Expressions Commission, the Pastor of Worship and Administration, and a representative from the Human Resources Committee.
