Computer Literacy Instructor

Under the direction of the Digital Literacy Site Coordinator, the Computer Literacy Instructor is responsible for providing students and library staff with direct training and assistance on beginner to advanced digital literacy topics. The Computer Literacy Instructor is also responsible for developing and revising digital literacy workshop curricula, and administrative tasks. Performs other duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Programming:

  • Delivers digital literacy workshops on Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced Microsoft Office Suite and workforce readiness topics.
  • Assesses customer needs. Develops and revises digital literacy curricula to reflect customer and staff needs.
  • Supports external instructors in specialized digital literacy workshops by acting as instructor's assistant.
  • Ensures programming quality based on enrollment and retention data.
  • Schedules digital literacy workshops.

Customer Service:

  • Assists customers one-on-one with digital literacy training needs during open lab hours.
  • Staff customer service desk to greet walk ins, answers telephone to respond to inquiries.
  • Refers customers to appropriate tutorials, instructions, programs, and staff members to answer technology-related questions and create individualized digital literacy training plans.
  • Follows up with program participants to track progress and make suggestions about further workshops and programs.

Administrative:

  • Provides support to staff with data collection including attendance and completion statistics.
  • Monitors participants' progress in programs using library and external tools. Maintains records related to participants' attendance, performance, and progress.
  • Collects success stories from customers as specified by library and funding sources.
  • Prepares reports on digital literacy workshops and programs as instructed by supervisor.

Outreach:

Builds and maintains relationships with community leaders, community-based organizations, and social service organizations.

SCHEDULE

Varied part-time schedule. Evenings and weekends frequently required.

The Computer Literacy Instructor must also consistently demonstrate the following competencies when performing the above responsibilities, including but not limited to initiative, flexibility in approaching daily responsibilities, cooperative teamwork, customer service orientation and impacting and influencing workforce readiness and digital literacy training.

KEY CONTACTS:

Interact with all community members. All Queens Public Library Departments, in particular Programs & Services, Community Learning, Information Technology and Development, Queens Public Library Foundation, Community Library Staff, Finance, Marketing and Communications staff and Facility/Custodial Services staff.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS

High School Diploma or Equivalency Diploma required. Some college preferred. Experience instructing digital literacy and workforce readiness topics preferred. Knowledge of Queens' community resources desirable.

Intermediate to advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and internet research required. Knowledge of other technology such as social media, coding/web development, and Adobe Creative Cloud desirable. Ability to learn quickly essential.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand and sit. The employee is occasionally required to walk. Must either move, or assist in moving of Program materials weighing up to 25 lbs. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Must physically interact with customers to describe or demonstrate the usage of materials, resources and/or facilities. Must be able to walk 2- 3 flights of stairs.Work environment may include participation in Queens Public Library events both indoors, outdoors, evenings and weekends throughout the year.
