SUMMER ORIENTATION LEADER APPLICATION DESCRIPTION

SUMMER ORIENTATION 

 

LEADER POSITION DESCRIPTION 

 

 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

 

  1. At least sophomore status (28 or more successfully completed credits) at the start of the dates of employment. 
  2. A minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5 at time of application. 
  3. Demonstrated involvement in campus life (as much as possible if you’re a new student). 

 

Please Note: Due to the sensitive nature of this position it is at the discretion of the Director of Orientation to review and consider any previous student conduct with the Dean of Students Office as a condition of employment. 

 

PERIOD OF EMPLOYMENT: 

 

Sunday, May 17 through Wednesday, July 12 

 

COURSE RESTRICTIONS: 

 

Eligible applicants MUST be enrolling in Fall 2026 courses at NMU. 

Students MIGHT be able to take a second-block summer course if approved by the director while employed as an Orientation Leader. A first block class is not an option due to 40+ hours of training in May and early June. 

 

REMUNERATION: 

Hourly wage of $14.60, plus room and board. 

 

Students hired MUST live on campus during employment from May 17th - July 12th. 

 

 

 

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES 

 

  1. Be available to assist students, families/guests, and University personnel throughout the duration of each orientation session. 
  2. Be familiar with the general and specific goals of the Orientation Program. 
  3. Be familiar with various University publications, academic offerings and available services in order to respond intelligently to questions about Northern Michigan University. 
  4. Assume general responsibility for the students assigned to your housing unit and/or group in each session. 
  5. Perform other responsibilities assigned by the Assistant Directors and/or Director of Orientation. 

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES 

 

  1. Actively participate in an extensive training program prior to the first summer session. 
  2. Actively participate as a member of the Summer Orientation Leader team. 
  3. Assist with the preparation of the residence halls prior to the beginning of the summer program (i.e., bulletin boards, desk area, keys, etc.). 
  4. Assist with check-in and check-out of participants for each session. 
  5. Provide campus tours for families and students attending each session. 
  6. Serve as a group leader for designated meetings and assist in distributing materials. 
  7. Assist with the development of an integrated program of small-group discussions, informational meetings, entertainment, and associated sessions necessary to ensure that students and their fa receive a comprehensive view of the University. 
  8. Perform certain functions related to improving or preparing for up-coming sessions between sessions as assigned. 
  9. Participate in an evaluation of each session and submit a written evaluation of the entire Summer Orientation Program. 
  10. Meet with the Assistant Directors and/or Director of Orientation whenever requested.
  11. Assist with the hosting of prospective students and/or guests as deemed appropriate by the Assistant Directors and/or Director of Orientation. 
  12. Assist with various program tasks or duties as deemed appropriate by the Assistant Directors and/or the Director of Orientation. 

PHASE ONE OF SELECTION PROCESS 

 

 

 

Selection Mini-Workshop – All candidates must attend ONE of the workshops below. Attendance at a workshop is mandatory for consideration. After applications are due, you will be emailed directions for your chosen night. 

ALL WORKSHOPS WILL BE HELD FROM 6:00 TO 8:00 P.M. EASTERN STANDARD TIME ZONE 

 

  • Tuesday, February 17th 

 

  • Wednesday, February 18th 

 

  • I can attend either of these dates. Please assign me to one.

PHASE TWO OF SELECTION PROCESS 

 

Individual Interviews – A number of candidates will be chosen from the Selection MiniWorkshops for an individual interview. Interviews will be held Friday, February 20th - through Tuesday, February 26th. Times and locations will be arranged on an individual basis. 

 

Notification of Selection will occur by Friday, February 27th.
