This internship supports operations at our 2 Food Project Farms, located in Longmont, CO. We practice low-till, organic, and garden scale methods for intensive production of vegetables. A majority of the produce from the farm is donated through local community partners to families with low access to fresh, organically grown produce. The farm supports a reduced-priced Farm Stand on Wednesdays from July through mid-October. The Food Project Farm also provides farm-based educational programming to local teens during a summer program and hundreds of pre- K elementary aged children through farm field trips in the spring and fall.
Food Project Farm Internship Duties
Responsibilities:
This position will support farm work on a one acre, diversified vegetable farm that practices regenerative agriculture at a human scale. This internship is designed to be an introduction to small-scale diversified veggie farming and will support in harvesting, washing, and packing, as well as plant and soil care, and on-farm program support.
This position may find themselves working with community groups (youth groups, farm volunteers, other community groups), on a small team with 1-2 other farm staff, or even independently at times.
Potential for participation in our Seed and Seedling Donation days at the end of May which take place in both Longmont and Boulder. These days require high energy and involve interacting with the public and assisting them with picking up seeds and seedlings for their home gardens.
Knowledge and Skills the Intern May Acquire:
Depth in understanding of issues of food access in local and larger food systems.
Experience and familiarity in all elements of vegetable production including seeding, transplanting, vegetable life cycles, harvesting, companion planting, harvesting, washing, and packing.
Understanding and hands on engagement with local, small scale regenerative agriculture practices, and principles.
Working with volunteers, community groups, and the general public on a community farm.
Structure of Internship
Internship duration is May 11th through August 14th.
Intern position is 15 hours per week. *Note: hours may vary between weeks; however the average number of hours per week will be 15 hours. Hours primarily take place during the week, however there is some required evening/weekend work
Intern will be required to attend a mandatory internship orientation on Monday, May 11th from 8:30am - 1:00pm
Intern will be working closely with a mentor from GG staff who will oversee all daily activities; an intern supervisor is available upon request for meetings and provides general oversight of Growing Gardens’ internship program
Interns will have the opportunity to meet with Growing Gardens staff to learn about various roles within the organization
Learning Objectives Contract – Developed within the first month of internship. This includes: position description, educational objectives, learning activities, and skill development
Evaluation – A midpoint evaluation and end of internship evaluation will include intern self-evaluation, supervisor, and mentor evaluation

Qualifications
We are looking for a friendly, outgoing, detail-oriented person with good communication skills who is excited to be outside in all weather conditions, and to get hands on with growing and harvesting food!
