Seasonal Trails and Streams Worker 2026

This Seasonal Trails & Streams position assists Trails and Streams staff with the construction, installation, and maintenance of trails and stream systems within district preserves.

What You'll Do

  • Perform trail construction and maintenance, including aggregate and turf surface repair, trimming encroaching vegetation, brush chipping, and maintaining drainage systems.
  • Operate small motorized machinery, light equipment, and hand tools, as well as motor vehicles, including pickup trucks.
  • Assist with trail patching and repair needs resulting from weather events that cause poor trail conditions.
  • Assist with the maintenance and restoration of natural and general-use areas by removing exotic and invasive plant species.
  • Assist with trail construction and installation of new trail surfaces.
  • Assist with constructing stormwater drainage systems such as culverts, swales, basins, pipes, excavation, and grading.
  • Assist with clearing stream blockages and removing river debris.
  • Foster a working environment that promotes safe work habits. Become familiar with and observe all applicable safety rules, policies, and procedures. Follow all safety rules related to assigned duties and support the District's safety and risk management program. Maintain a clean, orderly, and hazard-free work area. Immediately report all unsafe conditions and incidents.
  • Maintain a supportive working environment and demonstrate a desire to exceed the expectations of internal and external customers.
  • Perform other duties as required.

What You'll Need

  • 18 years of age or older at time of hire.
  • Valid Driver's License in good standing.
  • Previous experience in grounds maintenance, landscaping, or a related field preferred.
  • Able to perform physically demanding tasks in outdoor environments.
  • Proficiency with basic grounds maintenance equipment.
  • Basic knowledge of native and invasive flora.
  • Basic knowledge of conservation practices.

Schedule & Pay

  • Monday through Friday. 6:45 am. - 2:45 pm.
  • This position starts around April/May of 2026 and works for approximately 12 weeks.
  • $17 - 18 per hour

Work Setting

  • Position is based out of the Grounds Management Office inside of Blackwell Forest Preserve and requires frequent travel to Forest Preserve sites across the district.
  • Safety Toe Boots are required and reimbursable. Packed lunch and water are required.
