Family Leave Substitute Teacher - Social Studies, Grades 5-6

Job Title: Maternity Leave Substitute Teacher – Social Studies (Grades 5-6)
Reports to: Vice Principal and Principal
Location: The Epiphany School, New York, NY 10016


 

Position Summary

The Epiphany School, a Catholic elementary school committed to academic excellence and faith formation, is seeking a dedicated substitute teacher to cover an upcoming maternity leave in Social Studies for Grades 5 and 6. The ideal candidate will inspire curiosity about history, geography, culture, and current events while integrating Catholic values and critical thinking into daily learning. Enthusiasm for working with middle-grade students and a commitment to fostering their emotional and academic growth is essential.


 

Responsibilities

  • Plan and lead engaging Social Studies lessons in Grades 5-6, following New York State standards and guidance from the Archdiocese of New York. 
  • Assess student learning and regularly communicate progress to families.
  • Share and model Catholic faith, values, and traditions in daily interactions with all community members.
  • Foster a respectful, supportive, and faith-filled classroom environment.
  • Collaborate with teachers and staff to ensure continuity of instruction, student supervision, and classroom organizational procedures during the leave.
  • Communicate clearly and kindly with students, families, and colleagues.
  • Promoting positive student behavior
  • Provide supervision that ensures the safety and security of the school community.
  • Supervisory and administrative duties as assigned


 

Qualifications

  • Bachelors’ Degree required, with preference for degrees in Education, History, Global Studies, or related fields..
  • Prior teaching experience preferred.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and classroom management skills.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues and support the mission of Catholic education.
  • Teaching experience preferred
  • Authorized to work in the United States

Position Details

  • Duration: approximately February 2026 - May 2026, 
  • Schedule: full-time, Monday-Friday, 8:00am-3:00pm
  • Compensation: $195 per diem for the first 40 days, transition to a salaried position with benefits available on day 41. Salary scale and benefits as set by the Federation of Catholic Teachers.
