Job Duties
The Virginia Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) protects the public by preparing court-involved youth to be successful citizens. DJJ is committed to excellence in public safety by providing effective interventions that improve the lives of youth, strengthening both families and communities within the Commonwealth.
We are hiring a Chief of Security to assist with the administration of Bon Air Juvenile Correctional Center. Maintains a safe and secure environment to ensure the protection of the citizens of the Commonwealth and the health and safety of the incarcerated juveniles and staff. Responsible for providing oversight and supervision of all security-related operations, activities, and staff, as well as contributing to collaborative and multidisciplinary staff meetings. The role is a public-facing position that requires in-person, face-to-face work with the public to include staff, juveniles in our care and their families.
Requires periodic 24-hour on-call work, including after-hours (5:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m.) and weekend duties.
Essential Skills (not limited to):
- Strong oral and written communication abilities, with capacity to handle multiple priorities and collaborate across organizational levels.
- Strong ability to operate computer equipment, telecommunications, networks, and automated systems
- Maintains confidentiality of database information.
- Ability to review disciplinary reports to ensure that residents are afforded due process, and to ensure consistent application of disciplinary sanctions.
Core Responsibilities (not limited to):

Directs and Manages Facility Security Operations - Supervise, directly and through subordinate staff, all facility Security operations to maintain a safe and secure environment and to achieve goals of reductions in Serious Incident Reports (security-related), and resident and staff injuries, and effective management of Security Threat Group (gang-related) activity. Monitor security staff and residential staff performance and required documentation to ensure staff compliance with all applicable guidelines, standards, policies, and procedures. Conduct unit rounds weekly to ensure compliance and living quarters are acceptable. Assess training needs of residential staff and security staff contributes to development of an annual training plan to meet standard requirements and institutional needs no later than January 31st of each year.

SRT and Tactical Operations - Exercise oversight and accountability for all SRT activities, including selection, training, deployment, and performance evaluation of team members. Ensure all SRT operations align with agency procedures, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and legal and ethical standards governing use of force and emergency response.

Conducts Investigations - Ensures management is apprised of employee and organizational issues; resolves programmatic problems and provides guidance to supervisors on problem resolution.

Administrative Duties / On-Call - Serves as administrator on-call in accordance with the established schedule. Serves as administrative backup and after hours, weekend, and holiday on-call emergency contact for the facility.

Administrative Duties-HR Management - Interviewing, selection and hiring of employees is conducted in accordance with policy and law; employees are oriented and trained to effectively accomplish their work.
- Administrative Duties-Capital Resource Management - Effectively manages costs for overtime, wage employment, and contractual services by maximizing use of resources, scheduling effectively, and delegating and distributing workloads appropriately.
Minimum Qualifications
- Demonstrated knowledge of the criminal justice system and its operational framework.
- Familiarity with procedures, administration, and security standards in correctional or residential facilities.
- Extensive experience supervising staff and managing the development and enforcement of policies and procedures.
- Progressive leadership experience in a correctional or residential setting.
- Extensive experience overseeing complex security operations within correctional or residential environment, ensuring safety and compliance.
