What is the Summit Bechtel Reserve (SBR)? 

Experience thrilling adventures like whitewater rafting, rock climbing, skateboarding and BMX, mountain biking, and more at the Summit Bechtel Reserve (SBR), a 10,600-acre outdoor facility nestled in the heart of southern West Virginia, near the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve. A premier destination for Scouts and an array of other stakeholders, the Summit offers unique outdoor experiences for all visitors, including traditional summer camp and high-adventure treks; leadership training; family camping; and beautiful facilities for the celebration of milestone events. 

Principal Responsibilities

  • Facilitate climbing, ziplining, rappelling, and other aerial-sports activities for Scouting and other youth visitors
  • Provide helpful and efficient service and maintain a friendly and cheerful attitude
  • Participate in and complete specialized program training during the staff training period
  • Use all safety equipment mandated in each program venue
  • Ensure proper use, security, and care of program equipment
  • Fit participants with harnesses and helmet correctly and supervise use of personal protective equipment
  • Engage in and contribute to a summer camp environment
  • This is a summer seasonal position
  • Other duties or projects as assigned by full-time and seasonal SBR leadership
  • Abide by policies and procedure outlined in the SBR Staff Handbook

  • Salaried position (minimum compensation of $1,600.00 per month)

Qualifications & Training

  • Eighteen years old or older
  • Comfortable with heights between five and one hundred eighty feet
  • Experience facilitating aerial (climbing, ziplining, rappelling) and/or outdoor activities preferred
  • Must meet physical requirements to safely, according to the manufacturers, wear aerial sports personal protective equipment (minimum of fifty pounds; maximum of two hundred fifty pounds)
  • Scouting and/or camping experience considered a strong asset, but not required
  • Ability to use Microsoft Teams daily for work-related communication and coordination
  • Be or become a registered member of the Scouting America

Physical Requirements

  • Multiple hours a day of either standing, walking, or hiking, and the ability to lift 50-70 lbs.
  • Can be approved to work after receiving a physical examination and fall within the SBR height and weight requirements (HERE)
