Speech Language Pathologist

Speech Language Pathologist

OVERALL PURPOSE

This position is responsible for providing speech and language services to eligible students including screening, evaluation, direct therapy and consultation to teachers, parents, or staff across a variety of early childhood and school-age settings (individual, classroom-based, community-based, home-based, etc.).  These services must be provided in accordance with the district’s framework, board policies, administrative regulations, and state law. 

This position requires professional conduct that upholds the integrity and reputation of the Altoona Area School District (AASD), while maintaining thorough knowledge of and adherence to AASD’s policies and procedures.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (other duties may be assigned)

  1. Identify school-age children with impaired communication skills through screenings and diagnostic services, select those students for treatment and provide appropriate treatment plans
  2. Accept referrals for pupils suspected of exhibiting communication difficulties.
  3. Ensure referrals are entered into the screening/evaluation process according to program procedures.
  4. Conduct individual screenings/evaluations as part of a multidisciplinary team, and/or as part of a trans-disciplinary team.
  5. Determine eligibility for services and generate supporting Evaluation Reports (ER) either individually or as part of a team.
  6. Develop or revise Speech and Language goals and objectives within Individualized Education Plans (IEP) for eligible students, in coordination with parents, teachers, and other appropriate personnel.
  7. Provide appropriate interventions (individual, group, classroom-based, community-based, etc.) for eligible students.
  8. Counsel parents, teachers, and other personnel regarding communication disorders and the connection between language development and literacy.
  9. Assist in the development, organization, and delivery of training on communication and literacy.
  10. Participate in grant projects related to communication and literacy.
  11. Maintain accurate, up-to-date records of student evaluations, interventions and progress.  Generate reports to communicate progress to teachers, parents, and administrators, ensuring compliance with program policy.
  12. Adhere to timelines for paperwork submission.
  13. Stay informed and comply with Special Education laws and regulations.
  14. Maintain communication with external agencies as needed.
  15. Participate in faculty meetings regularly and assist in the sponsorship of student activities.
  16. Engage  in continuing education to support professional growth and development.
  17. Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor within certification guidelines.
  18. Serve as liaison between home, school, and community agencies.
  19. Monitor and evaluate student goals.
