About us: Grand Rapids Community Media Center (GRCMC) is a nonprofit media organization, dedicated to building community through media providing avenues for self-expression, uniting diverse points of view. GRCMC programming includes public-access television stations GRTV and LiveWire, community radio station 88.1FM WYCE, community venue Wealthy Theatre, Web Development Services for nonprofits, and the local online news platform The Rapidian.
Position Summary: The GRTV Video Production Internship is for a creative, self-motivated individual with the production and editing skills to manage a project from concept to completion (with mentorship) who is passionate about community storytelling. The goal is to foster a new, community-centric project, meaning its subject is firmly rooted in our local or regional community. The central requirement is to propose, develop, and complete a self-driven video project with a target runtime of 10-20 minutes. Proposals will be prioritized based on a clear community focus and local impact. Projects must be new, original concepts (not already in production) in any format (e.g., documentary, narrative, experimental, profile, video portrait, series pilot).
This definition of community-centric is broad: projects can be historical, cultural, celebratory, critical, or insightful, about a local culture, figure, issue, or lifestyle. The focus is also specific: we are seeking proposals that aim to tell a community story, not projects that primarily explore a personal interest or topic unrelated to Grand Rapids or West Michigan.
This is a non-commercial, community-focused internship intended for a manageable, self-directed project to be executed primarily by the intern. It is not a grant for established professionals or large-scale productions requiring extensive crews.
The selected intern will receive mentorship, creative feedback, and access to professional-grade equipment, editing suites, and technical support. The final project will be broadcast on GRTV, shared on GRTV's digital platforms, submitted for GR Film Society’s Open Projector Night, and submitted for the Hometown Media Awards, the Alliance for Community Media’s yearly National awards program.

Successful proposals will demonstrate a creative, community-focused concept coupled with a realistic understanding of production requirements. The proposal serves as a starting point, which will be refined with GRTV staff after selection.
