Position Overview

The Associate Teacher (2nd Grade) is a key member of our lower elementary team, supporting two Lead Teachers (one in each 2nd grade classroom) throughout the school day. You’ll be a flexible collaborator — providing small-group instruction, classroom support, and community-building across both rooms.
 

In addition, you’ll teach Science to both 1st and 2nd grade classrooms — designing and leading engaging, inquiry-based lessons that make learning fun, hands-on, and memorable for our youngest scholars.

Key Responsibilities

Instructional Support

  • Partner with both 2nd grade Lead Teachers to support instruction, engagement, and classroom management.
  • Teach Science lessons to both 1st and 2nd grade classes — bringing experiments and exploration to life!
  • Provide one-on-one and small group tutoring or interventions as needed.
  • Assist with grading, data tracking, and classroom planning.
  • Support the use of rigorous, standards-aligned curriculum in collaboration with your team.

Classroom & School Culture

  • Help maintain joyful, structured classrooms that promote curiosity, respect, and growth.
  • Model consistent expectations and positive behavior management.
  • Supervise students during arrival, lunch, recess, dismissal, and transitions.
  • Keep classrooms organized, safe, and ready for learning.

Family Engagement

  • Partner with Lead Teachers in communicating with families about student progress and classroom updates.
  • Participate in school-wide events, parent-teacher conferences, and family engagement nights.
  • Celebrate student growth and achievement with families and the school community.

Professional Growth

  • Engage in ongoing professional development, coaching, and feedback sessions.
  • Collaborate with your grade-level and Science teaching peers.
  • Reflect on practice and continuously work to grow as an educator.

Who You Are / Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree (required)
  • NYS Teaching Certification or willingness to pursue (required)
  • At least 1 year of classroom or education experience (preferred)
  • Experience with early elementary students a plus
  • Strong organizational, communication, and relationship-building skills
  • A collaborative spirit and “can-do” attitude

 

Hours & Physical Requirements

  • Schedule: Monday–Friday, 7:10 AM – 4:15 PM (occasional evenings/weekends for events)
  • Able to sit, stand, walk, bend, and lift up to 20 pounds
  • Able to use standard classroom and office equipment
  • Must read, write, and speak English fluently

 

Background Check

All employees must pass a fingerprint-supported background check per NYS law. Destine Prep covers all associated costs.
