WellBeing Peer Educator Job Description + Requirements

Peer educators are responsible for WellBeing Department programming initiatives across campus, utilizing the 8 dimensions of WellBeing. They will develop and assist with events and campaigns to encourage campus-wide change surrounding holistic wellbeing and prevention efforts. Applicants should have an overall interest in shaping a healthier campus community.  

This position provides students the opportunity to help create and deliver programming, hone their public speaking and workshop facilitation skills, extensively practice program development and implementation, and work both individually and as a team. Peer educators will collaborate with a variety of departments and groups across campus. They will also become NASPA Certified Peer Educators, and receive ongoing training.

Some of the programming they will be involved with include (but is not limited to) education around the eight dimensions of wellbeing, alcohol and other substances, bystander intervention, stress management, and supportive relationships. Peer Educators must be comfortable speaking in front of groups of varying sizes and able to facilitate engagement with their peers. They will perform their work in a highly collaborative environment and will be expected to work closely with students and professional staff to complete the responsibilities listed below.   

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. In collaboration with other peer educators, plan and implement targeted, educational workshops, events, and campaigns.
  2. Work cooperatively with WellBeing Department staff, NMU departments and groups, and community partners.
  3. Attend weekly staff meetings, scheduled training, and department meetings as planned.
  4. Assist in social media and marketing campaign planning and development for the NMU WellBeing social media account(s).
  5. Maintain up-to-date, evidence-based knowledge to support accurate wellbeing promotion efforts.
  6. Assist in the evaluation of program efforts and offer input into future directions for the program.
  7. Complete related duties as assigned.

From the WellBeing Promotions Coordinator

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or higher; minimum semester GPA of 2.5 or higher during the semester preceding application for employment; a minimum GPA of 2.5 or higher must be earned each semester for continuation of employment.
  2. Sophomore status or above.
  3. Willing to commit to a minimum of 2 semesters.
  4. Interest in promoting student health and wellbeing.
  5. Capable of interacting with individuals from all backgrounds and perspectives.
  6. Able to work 12 hours per week at a variety of weekday events, including at least two consistent evenings per week (within the time frame of 6pm-10pm), and willing to work occasional weekend events.
  7. Above average communication skills in speaking, active listening, and writing.
  8. Able to work both independently and on a team.
  9. Proficient in managing time effectively and balancing priorities.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Demonstrated involvement in campus life.
  2. Experience with community outreach.
  3. Evidence of workshop facilitation skills.
  4. Experience creating Instagram reels and other social media planning.
