Joel Fitzpatrick Studio is a New York–based creative studio specializing in immersive environments, architectural lighting, and large-scale art and design experiences. Our projects bridge the worlds of art, technology, and performance — from custom lighting installations and exhibitions to brand activations and large-scale productions.

Position Overview
We’re seeking a technically minded, design-driven Technical Director to oversee the execution of our installations, exhibitions, and event builds. The ideal candidate is fluent in both creative and technical languages — capable of translating design intent into precise technical documentation, managing fabrication workflows, and ensuring seamless on-site execution.

Responsibilities

Collaborate closely with the Creative Director and design team to develop technical drawings, lighting plots, and build documentation in Vectorworks

Oversee projection mapping, LED wall integration, and media playback systems for various installations and events

Manage vendor coordination, shop drawings, and fabrication details

Provide on-site technical supervision during installs, strikes, and testing

Specify and source technical equipment, including lighting, rigging, power distribution, and AV systems

Maintain project timelines and ensure adherence to budgets and safety standards

Interface with clients, venues, and production partners to align creative vision with technical feasibility

Lead and mentor freelance technicians, engineers, and interns as needed

Qualifications

Proven experience as a Technical Director, Production Designer, or Senior Technician in a creative studio, theater, or live event setting

Proficiency in Vectorworks (2D & 3D drafting required; rendering skills a plus)

Hands-on experience with projection, LED systems, and lighting control (DMX / media servers / QLab / Resolume / Watchout / ETC)

Strong understanding of power distribution, load calculations, and rigging

Excellent communication and problem-solving skills — able to adapt under pressure and lead complex installations

Based in New York City or willing to work on-site for projects and builds
