Save the Harbor is the region’s leading voice for clean water and continued public investment in Boston Harbor, the region's public beaches, and the Boston Harbor Islands. We provide free waterfront programming and events that connect youth, teens and families to our spectacular, urban natural resources, with an emphasis on breaking down barriers of race, language, income and ability. Save the Harbor/Save the Bay is seeking a Summer Program Assistant to support our high school and college aged summer staff in our nine week Youth Jobs & Leadership Program. This position is for an individual who has experience managing schedules, handling logistics, working with young adults, and communicating across multiple platforms.
For nine weeks, the Summer Program Assistant will be responsible for managing the schedules of the summer youth staff along with senior team leaders . In addition to managing the youth staff, the Summer Program Assistant is responsible for day to day program operations with the support of the Program Director and Program Coordinator. These responsibilities include contacting program partners, creating weekly schedules for staff, supporting summer events, and supplies maintenance and organization.
Strong communication, organization, and flexibility are desired traits to be a successful Summer Program Assistant. This position is currently hybrid with one day remote and four days on site. It is encouraged that the Summer Program Assistant forms meaningful relationships with staff, especially the high school and college students as they look for guidance in professional networks during the summer and beyond.
Responsibilities
Important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Create weekly schedule for summer staff that is comprehensive with Google Maps links and share with staff via email and GroupMe
- Organize weekend tabling event staffing schedule, prepare and organize tabling materials, and communicate logistics to the youth staff via group message
- Lead check in process, youth staff roles, and welcoming of youth and community groups to our All Access Boston Harbor free cruise program on Tuesday through Thursday mornings
- Communicate with community partners ahead of their community events to gather logistics to share with youth staff
- Forge relationships with our summer staffers to support them in building their professional networks
- Support and attend Save the Harbor run beach events; Eastie Beach Bash, Carson Kickback, and more.
- Build agenda for and help facilitate weekly senior staff meetings and full youth staff meetings
- Attend occasional field trips with program partners for Leadership Fridays and the Boston Harbor research cohort
- Attending occasional night and weekend events
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree and two years of related work experience, or at least 5 years of related work experience
- Background in teaching or program management, preferably in a school, youth center, summer camp, or coaching environment
- Experience creating schedules and communicating logistics to teens
- Outgoing, enthusiastic, organized, and excitement to work outside
- Proficiency in Spanish, Haitian Creole, Mandarin and/or Cape Verdean Creole preferred, but not required.
- Proficiency with Google Suite, Outlook, Slack, and GroupMe
Terms of Employment
- Hours: 25-30 hours a week, Monday-Friday roughly 9AM-3PM
- Compensation: $27-30/hr
- Full time seasonal: June through the end of August (Specific dates TBA).
- This is a paid seasonal position without benefits.
- Occasional nights and weekends will be required
This position will be primarily in person along the waterfront at sites that are accessible by public transportation. Most mornings you will be reporting directly to our office on the Fish Pier in the Seaport and then head over to Fan Pier (Tuesday/Thursdays) or Leader Bank Pavillion (Wednesdays) for All Access Boston Harbor. Your schedule will primarily remain constant in terms of tasks but there will be weekly field trips throughout the summer you will need to attend.
