Public Affairs Intern

Public Affairs Intern
(20-25 hours per week)


Under supervision, candidate will assist in the day-to-day activities of OCWD’s public affairs department which includes communications and legislative tasks such as drafting and updating news releases, fact sheets, talking points, letters, educational materials, and other materials as assigned; assisting with special event planning and execution; working with departments on social media campaigns, graphics and videos; coordinating special projects and community outreach; interacting with government and community organizations; updating the District website; monitoring and summarizing legislative committee hearings, work sessions, and bills, and providing oral summaries of legislation; and providing general administrative support to the department as assigned.

 

Typical Qualifications

 

Must be a current full-time undergraduate or graduate school student with major emphasis in Communications, Public Affairs, Public Policy/Administration, Public Relations, Political Science, Pre-Law, Economics, Business, or related field. A qualified candidate should possess several of the following skills: excellent writing and organization; knowledge of California and US legislative processes; knowledge of MS Office applications; familiarity with social media platforms and practices; ability to analyze documents and summarize information into easy-to-understand summaries. A valid California Class “C” Driver’s License and proof of automobile insurance are required.

Internships intend to provide meaningful training and work experience for students pursuing academic studies related to the District’s mission and goals. Interns must submit proof of full-time enrollment, class schedules, and grades each semester/quarter. Interns are not eligible for employee benefits. Interns are “at-will” and can be terminated at the discretion of the Department Manager with or without cause and with or without prior notice. This is not a seasonal internship. Interns work year-round. 

You will not be considered if you do not meet the criteria for both #1 & #2 below.

1. Interns must be currently enrolled full time (Fall 2024) in an accredited bachelor or graduate program related to this field.
2. Interns must have at least one year remaining in school.

*You must provide an unofficial transcript and cover letter explaining how your schooling relates to this internship and your expected graduation date. You must also submit (attach) a graded writing sample and a reference letter from a past or current teacher along with your application.

Environment: Standard office setting.


 

Physical: Positions in this class typically require grasping, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motion. Sedentary Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met. Incumbents may be subjected to travel. Incumbents require sufficient physical ability to work in an office setting; stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; operate office equipment including use of a computer keyboard; push, pull, lift, and/or carry light amounts of weight; verbally communicate to exchange information.

 

Vision: See in the normal visual range with or without correction; vision sufficient to read computer screens and printed documents; and to operate assigned equipment.

 

Hearing: Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.

 

Supplemental Information

Schedule: Working hours will be scheduled to accommodate the intern's school schedule and District events. Standard hours will fall within regular operating hours, which are Monday to Friday between 7:30 AM - 5:00 PM. This is a part-time internship not to exceed 25 working hours a week. We are looking for interns who can work up to 20-25 hours/week.

Hourly Rate: Undergraduate: $17 per hour & Graduate: $20 per hour
