Product Design Fellow

Hours: 8–12 hours per week

Joy Education Foundation is a technology-driven nonprofit dedicated to reducing inequities in access to affordable literacy support for low-income communities. Through Virtual Reading Clinics, Mobile Reading Clinics, and a Digital Foundational Reading Skills Curriculum, we use innovation and community partnerships to strengthen literacy outcomes. Our next stage of product innovation includes AI-enabled literacy tools and gamified learning experiences that make practice more interactive, personalized, and joyful for students.
Position Overview
The Product Design Fellow will focus on user experience, accessibility, and visual design for Joy Education’s digital literacy products. This role emphasizes designing for AI-enhanced reading supports and game-based learning features that keep students motivated and engaged. Working closely with the Product Development Fellow and guided by the Product Management Fellow, the Design Fellow will create intuitive, inclusive, and interactive experiences that bring literacy learning to life.
Key Responsibilities
- Design wireframes, mockups, and prototypes that showcase AI-enabled tools and gamified learning experiences.
- Apply human-centered and accessible design principles (multilingual, neurodiverse, and mobile-first)
- Partner with students, families, and staff to gather feedback on AI and gamification features, then refine designs accordingly.
- Collaborate with the Product Development Fellow to ensure smooth design-to-build translation.
- Contribute to Joy Education’s visual identity and product branding, ensuring tools are engaging and approachable for students and families.
Qualifications
- Background or strong interest in UX/UI design, graphic design, or human-centered design.
- Familiarity with design tools (Figma, Canva, Adobe XD, or similar).
- Interest in AI applications in education and game-based learning design.
- Knowledge of inclusive and accessible design practices.
- Strong creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.
Collaboration with Product Management & Development Fellows
- Attend weekly product syncs with the Product Management and Product Development Fellows.
- Ensure designs align with roadmap priorities for AI-enabled and gamified learning features.
- Share prototypes for user testing and adapt based on findings.
- Contribute to product pilots across Virtual Reading Clinics, Mobile Clinics, and family engagement programs.
