Position Title: Theater Education Internship

Location: Lookingglass Theatre

Fixed Pay Per Semester: $4500

Hours: 15 hours per week / Hybrid / The Lookingglass administrative team regularly work onsite at 163 E Pearson St, Chicago IL 60611 on Tuesdays and Thursdays, but exact in-person and remote hours may be determined by the Education Director

About Us

Lookingglass Theatre Company is one of the country’s largest ensemble theatres dedicated to creating new work that redefines the theatrical experience and makes it more exhilarating, inspirational, and accessible. Now in its 38th year and based in the historic Water Tower Water Works on Chicago’s Michigan Avenue, the Company is known for story-centered, visually rich productions. A 2011 Tony Award recipient for Outstanding Regional Theatre, Lookingglass also shares its ensemble-based techniques with students, teachers, community organizations, and corporations through its Department of Curiosity, which cultivates creativity, expands access, and helps “change, charge, and empower” classrooms and communities across Chicago.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Lookingglass Education: Participatory Evaluation Coordinator will research best practices for participatory evaluation of programs.  They will design both the internal process at Lookingglass as well as the evaluation tools that will be used by teaching artists implementing programs for all ages.  They will lead training sessions for public school teachers and the theatre’s team of teaching artists to introduce the new evaluation tools.  They will support the theatre’s creative, empowering, anti-racist and inclusive practices.  

Successful candidates will: 

  • Collaborate with Lookingglass Director of Education, teaching artists, Chicago Public School partners, and other organizational partners to build participatory, inclusive, and accessible evaluation tools. 
  • Demonstrate excellent research and written and verbal communication skills. 
  • Demonstrate excellent project management skills. 
  • Conduct interviews with Lookingglass’ leadership team, CPS teachers, and teaching artists. 
  • Be excited to learn new systems and to introduce those systems to stakeholders.
  • Demonstrate a proactive approach to their education and professional development.
  • Appropriately follow protocols for recording hours worked 
  • Attend Lookingglass trainings and professional development workshops, as applicable
  • Participate in organization-wide anti-racism work and incorporate an anti-racist lens into daily practice. This work, by the Board, Ensemble, and staff, is ongoing

Qualifications 

  • Graduate student in education (leadership, policy, research, and/or teaching) with some PK–12 teaching experience.
  • Strong research, communication (written, verbal, interviewing), and project management skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to anti-racist, inclusive, and accessible educational practices, and comfort collaborating with diverse partners.

This internship is funded through IBHE grant (Illinois Cooperative Work Study Program): #26ICWS15. Applicants must be US Citizens, Permanent Residents, and/or have an active student visa.
