GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES
Provides comprehensive administrative and clerical support to the Environmental Health Department, ensuring efficient office operations, exceptional customer service, and accurate processing of departmental applications, payments, and reports.

- Serve as the department’s primary receptionist, delivering courteous and professional customer service in person and by telephone.
- Process a variety of permit applications, including new and existing septic tank, repair, water sample, migrant labor camp, well, swimming pool, tattoo establishment, and food establishment permits.
- Receive, document, and route complaints from Duplin County residents regarding sewage, restaurants, and other environmental health issues.
- Collect and process payments, calculate daily transactions, and reconcile accounts to maintain financial accuracy.
- Provide administrative support to supervisors and departmental staff, including correspondence, scheduling, and general office duties.
- Prepare, compile, and submit monthly departmental reports in a timely and accurate manner.
- Maintain and organize departmental files, both electronic and hard copy, ensuring compliance with county and state recordkeeping requirements.
- Utilize Microsoft Office Suite and other software applications to prepare documents, update records, and improve administrative procedures.
- Communicate effectively with the public regarding departmental policies, scheduling, and application processes.
- Draft professional correspondence for distribution to contractors, clients, and other agencies.
- Collect, sort, and distribute departmental mail and water samples.
- Transmit and receive information via fax, email, and postal mail on behalf of the Environmental Health staff.
- Maintain and update data in county and state computer-based systems to ensure accurate and up-to-date program information.
- Perform miscellaneous assignments and provide cross-departmental support to assist Environmental Health staff as needed.
MARGINAL FUNCTIONS
While the following tasks are necessary for the work of the unit, they are not an essential part of the purpose of this position and may also be performed by other unit members.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
- High school diploma or GED;
- Supplemented by one (1) or two (2) years previous experience and/or training involving office reception or secretarial work; or
- An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
