Job Summary:
Nature of Work:
The Bilingual Pediatric Medical Assistant will workcollaboratively with our exceptional pediatric team, servingpatients from infancy through young adulthood (ages 0–25).This role requires flexibility to support both pediatric cliniclocations based on operational needs. The ideal candidate willdemonstrate cultural sensitivity and a strong commitment tosupporting patients with limited access to economic andhealthcare resources, both in-person and remotely via phoneor Tele-Health platforms such as Zoom. Daily responsibilitiesinclude bilingual communication (Spanish and English),translating clinical terminology for patients and colleagues, andperforming courteous patient check-in procedures using bothin-person and virtual technologies. The MA will adhere to CDCguidelines during flu seasons and pandemics and maintainstrict compliance with University and professional standards.Engagement with community partners—including public healthagencies, specialty providers, hospitals, and other healthcarefacilities—is expected. Participation in regular team huddles,meetings, and staff development sessions is required. Theposition also encourages ongoing professional growth throughCU’s robust learning and development resources.
About the Clinic:
Sheridan Health Services is a multi-site, nurse-managedfederally qualified community health center, funded through theHealth Resources and Services Administration Bureau ofPrimary Healthcare, and is a collaborative effort between theCollege of Nursing and the Sheridan School District. There aretwo convenient locations to serve community health needs,primarily for residents of Arapahoe, Denver, and Jeffersoncounties. A Youth Health Clinic is located in the SheridanSchool District Administration building. The Family HealthClinic, located in southwest Denver on the Fort Logan campus,provides services to adults and children. Notably, 65% of itsclients identify as Latinx, and 42% are best served in anotherlanguage, with Spanish being the predominant secondlanguage.
Services offered include primary care across thelifespan; prenatal and postpartum, gynecology, dentistry,pharmacy, behavioral health, and outpatient substance use treatment. Sheridan Health Services is a Patient-Centered Medical Home, and as such, we uphold a model of care thatplaces the patient at the center, incorporating the values andbeliefs of the patient in all decision-making. Supervision Received:
Direct supervision will be provided by an RN for Case Management, an APN Clinical Lead, or the SHS ClinicalOperations Manager.
Examples of Duties Performed (Direct PatientCare: 70%; Administrative Responsibilities: 30%)
Utilize the Electronic Health Record (EHR) to:
Measure and document vital signs and notifyproviders of out-of-range values.
Review and complete medicationreconciliation.
Accurately document the patient’s chiefcomplaint and health history.
Prepare and coach patients for provider examinationsand assist providers with examinations and procedures,as needed.
Perform standard patient screening tests using appsand advanced technological tools for secure HIPAA-compliant communication workflow in the clinic (high-speed laptops, iPads, MS Teams /Jabber).
Perform phlebotomy and follow safe lab procedures forthe proper collection and handling of other labspecimens.
Perform basic wound care and first aid.
Provide patient education with regard to office policies,lab results, medications, diagnoses, treatment, plan ofcare, and follow-up phone calls.
Prepare, administer, and electronically documentmedications within scope (i.e., Depo-Provera) withprovider authorization.
Administer immunization, maintain immunizationrecords, and complete annual immunization trainingwithin the timeline set by the supervisor.
Perform clerical and administrative duties regularly andas needed, including covering front desk staff andanswering overflow incoming calls during absencesand busy times.
Courteously answer phone and scheduleappointments, fax and upload orders, internal andexternal records/reports, and prepare schooldocuments for the provider's signature.
Work with the MA team to maintain supply inventorythrough tracking and stocking, including maintenanceof sterilized instruments. Also places orders forreplacements through the Compliance Officer.
Fax prescriptions to the pharmacy as requested byproviders and participate in insurance PriorAuthorizations (PARs), as needed.
Performs additional miscellaneous job duties asassigned, including clinic grant initiatives.
At the Medical Assistant I level
Duties are limited inscope and are performed with guidance and direction fromother positions in a training and development capacity.
At the Medical Assistant I level, the focus is on developing medicalassistant skills through basic functions of the position asoutlined above, with the intent to promote after approximately 1year of experience, and completion of specific training andperformance evaluations/coaching.
At the Medical Assistant II level
Duties are similar tothose performed at level I, but the complexity of the job isdifferent.
In addition to the examples of work performed at alllevels, positions at the Medical Assistant II level: Process basic referrals and imaging study orders.
Process prior authorization requests.
Train and onboard newly hired MAs.
Perform clinical equipment quality checks routinely inaccordance with manufacturer recommendations andcompliance standards.

Minimum Qualifications:
Medical Assistant I:
Completion of an accredited medical assistantprogram.
Medical Assistant II:
Completion of an accredited medical assistantprogram.
One (1) year of experience working as a medicalassistant.
Substitutions:
Medical Assistant:
One year of medical assistant experience maysubstitute for completion of an accredited program, andis in addition to any required years of experience.
Nursing Aide / Licensed Practical Nurse / Emergency MedicalTechnician:
Completion of an accredited program, Colorado statelicensure, and years of experience in any of these fieldsmay substitute for medical assistant-specificrequirements.
Current Registered Nursing Student:
Colorado State Certified Nurse Aid licensure maysubstitute for completion of an accredited medical assistant program.
Completion of Medical/Surgical Nursing I course with apassing grade may substitute for completion of anaccredited medical assistant program.
Registered Nurse / Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery(MBBS) / Doctor of Medicine (MD):
Completion of an accredited program in any of thesefields (or similar) may substitute for completion of anaccredited medical assistant program.
Conditions of Employment:
Must be willing and able to obtain current BLS/CPRcertification by date of hire.
Must be willing and able to speak Spanish and Englishon a daily basis to communicate clinical terminologyand speak at a conversational level in a clinical setting.
Must be willing and able to remain credentialed andensure credentialing materials stay current.
Must be willing and able to work until 8 pm ondesignated extended hours shifts as needed
Availability to work weekends on an infrequent,rotating, as-needed basis
Must be willing and able to work in a normal patientcare environment with some exposure to biologicalhazards and infectious diseases.
Preferred Qualifications:
Medical Assistant I:
Experience with or formal training in handlingbloodborne pathogens.
Experience with or formal training in complying withOSHA Biohazard Safety Standards.
Experience working in a Federally Qualified HealthCenter and/or Patient-Centered Medical Home environment.
Medical Assistant II:
Experience with or formal training in retrieving imagingstudies, querying patient record database (i.e.,COHRIO, or similar).
Experience with injections, vaccine administration, anddocumentation.
Experience training new hires.
Experience with or formal training in phlebotomy andpoint of care testing.
Experience with or formal training in working with apopulation/subpopulation related to the job (pediatric).
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position hasbeen established as:
Medical Assistant I: $41,600 to $43,680
Medical Assistant II: $43,680 to $45,760
