About the Office:
The Novel Biomaterials Lab in the School of Architecture investigates compostable, construction-grade materials derived from natural polymers such as chitin, gelatin, and seaweed.
About the VOLinternship Program:
The VOLintern Program is UTK's on-campus internship program. Each internship will run for the duration of one academic semester. About the Internship:
The internship will help gain experience in Experimental Biomaterials Fabrication.
Internship Responsibilities:
The Fabrication and Design Intern will assist with the design and fabrication of experimental building materials—plastic-like sheets, tiles, and small-scale prototypes—using basic lab and workshop procedures. Responsibilities include: Mixing, heating, cooling, and casting biopolymer-based materials in molds; Cleaning and maintaining equipment and workspace; Keeping detailed records of material recipes, processes, and results; Assisting with preparation of samples, prototypes, and presentation materials for research and exhibition.
Qualifications
- Interest in material experimentation, fabrication, or sustainable design; Comfort with hands-on work in a lab or shop setting (training provided); Attention to detail and ability to follow established procedures.
Additional Information
- Part-time (5–10 hours/week) during the semester, with flexible scheduling.
