About the Office:
Department of Classics. Classics is the study of the ancient Greek and Roman world in all its aspects: languages, literature, history, culture, archaeology, and art. The Classics faculty teach a wide range of topics, in addition to being active researchers in their fields, with numerous publications, including books and articles. The Department of Classics also connects with local communities of teachers and Classics enthusiasts, aiming to promote Classics and cultivate the next generation of K-12 teachers and scholars in the field. Outreach activities include Latin Day, the Undergraduate Conference, numerous school fairs, Archaeology Day, college fairs, and local professional meetings.
About the VOLinternship Program:
The VOLintern Program is UTK's on-campus internship program. Each internship will run for the duration of one academic semester. About the Internship:
This internship will involve maintaining an active role in the many outreach activities that the Classics Department sponsors, including visits to local schools, meeting with teachers, and helping organizing outreach and more scholarly events. The intern will have the opportunity to work closely with other students, faculty and local HS Latin teachers. This experience will be especially useful for students who intend to pursue a graduate degree in the humanities and/or teach Latin in secondary schools. This internship will help develop communicative and organizational skills.
Internship Responsibilities:
- Attend college and job fairs to promote Classics
- Coordinate departmental-sponsored activities such as the Undergraduate Conference, game day or archaeology day
- Visit local Latin programs
- Attend professional meetings
- Prepare outreach and promotional materials
Qualifications
- An active interest in Classics (broadly conceived), with a solid preparation in Latin (and, ideally, Greek) and Roman culture in general
- Major in Classics (including civilization and archaeology) or related fields
- An interest in pursuing a graduate degree in the humanities and/or K-12 teaching (preferably, but not only, in Latin)
- Willingness to visit local schools and attend local meetings in the Knoxville area
- Willingness to learn and work closely with the faculty mentor
- Willingness to work evenings and weekends
- Basic knowledge of computer programs to prepare fliers and other promotional activities
