Leadership in Sports Coaching Intern - Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies
About the Office:
The Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies (ELPS) prepares leaders for schools and colleges, faculty for colleges and universities, and policy scholars for service in state, regional and national agencies associated with educational and human service enterprises.
About the VOLinternship Program:
The VOLintern Program is UTK's on-campus internship program. Each internship will run for the duration of one academic semester. About the Internship:
The Leadership in Sports Coaching Program Intern is responsible for assisting the Program Director with important tasks (administrative, structural, and research-oriented) related to the development of the Program. These responsibilities require a great deal of communication, initiative, attention to detail, timeliness, and creativity.
Internship Responsibilities:
Under the supervision of the Program Director, the intern will assist/lead in the following duties (this list may be amended as needed):
- Creating, and administering an online survey for student-athletes in spring semester LEAD 201 class, compiling results of the survey and reporting overall results. In addition, the intern will lead focus groups from student-athletes from that same class who would be willing to volunteer for these. The intern will record notes and present findings.
- Interviewing local high school/sport club coaches to understand current professional needs/aspirations/challenges, recording results for review
- Performing a landscape review of all academic (high school/college/university) programs related to sport coaching in the U.S., compiling information in a clear and understandable format
- Performing a landscape review of all conferences related to sport coaching in the U.S., compiling information in a clear and understandable format
- Performing a landscape review of all sport coaching organizations in the U.S. and abroad, compiling information in a clear and understandable format
- Writing a systematic literature review of recent peer-reviewed academic articles on sport coaching (where participants were sports coaches), starting with annotated bibliographies, leading to a full review
- Reviewing potential grants that are associated with sports coaches or sports coaching programs, creating a clear and understandable document with emphases, requirements, restrictions, deadlines, formats, etc.
Qualifications
The Intern must be able to effectively communicate, in a timely matter, in person, electronically, and using a variety of devices (e.g., telephone, Zoom, email). The Intern must be able to meet with the Program Director in person on a weekly basis to review tasks, progress on tasks, and ideas that can make tasks more substantive. The Intern should be able to meet deadlines as prescribed by the Program Director (given the hours provided), and when these deadlines cannot be met, communicate immediately with the Program Director with justification/rationale.
Additional Information:
The Program Director is responsible for ensuring that the Intern has the necessary information, resources, and time to complete prescribed tasks. Although not required, interns with high school/college sports and/or coaching backgrounds are encouraged to apply.
