Environmental and Climate Intern

Job Description: 

During this internship, learn to lead environmental and climate-focused programs, demonstrations, and lessons. Provide outreach to youth and families through programs about environmental topics including native plants, native wildlife, climate change, and more.  

Learning Objective:  

The Rockland Electric Environmental and Climate intern should have interests in supporting environmental and climate change education. Interns will learn about NJ Audubon’s conservation initiatives and programs and be trained to lead a variety of programs serving youth and the general public at Lorrimer Sanctuary. Additionally, interns will be provided with the opportunity to steward the Sanctuary’s 14 acres through gardening activities, trail maintenance, and other projects. 

 MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Guiding environmental programming 
  • School field trips, scout programs, seniors programs, general public 
  • Developing new or updating climate change curricula 
  • Overseeing stewardship projects 
  • Maintaining pollinator gardens 
  • Working with volunteers to enhance trails and habitat areas at Lorrimer Sanctuary. 
  • Assume additional responsibilities as required. 

QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS: 

  • Full-time status as a degree-seeking undergraduate student with at least 24 credit hours earned at an accredited college or university. 
  • Passion for teaching environmental concepts to children and families, gardening. 
  • Excellent Computer Skills – Microsoft Office, use of social media. 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with ability to modify messages for different audiences including children, young adults, parents, and teachers. 
  • Excellent organizational, time and project management skills with the ability to manage multiple projects, shifting priorities and meet deadlines. 
  • Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills with the ability to relate to and motivate a diverse range of people, exercise cultural competence and inclusion, and accept direction and constructive feedback. 
  • Motivated self-starter able to work independently in the execution of their responsibilities while collaborating with other staff and organizations with the ability to demonstrate initiative and a positive attitude. 
  • Strong professionalism and work ethic with the ability to exercise discretion and maintain confidentiality. 
  • Flexibility to adjust hours to meet deadlines and needs of the organization, including availability to work occasional evenings and weekends. 
  • Obtain satisfactory background check 
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and be able to operate a motor vehicle in NJ. 
  • Ability to walk on uneven surfaces as needed for outdoors events and lift up to 25 lbs.
