Research Assistant

Position Title: RITA UARC Research Assistants 
Department: Tactical Autonomy  
Location: Washington, D.C. (Hybrid preferred)  
Position Type: Part-Time (20 hours per week)  
Number of Positions: Up to 4 

 

About the RITAUARC 
The Research Institute for Tactical Autonomy (RITA), a University Affiliated Research Center (UARC) led by Howard University, is dedicated to advancing the future of secure, intelligent autonomous systems. Through collaboration with academic, government, and industry partners, we drive research and innovation that impacts national security, STEM education, and technological development.  
 

Position Overview
We seek ‘eager to learn’ and ‘detail-oriented’ Research Assistants to be mentored by, learn from, and work collaboratively with Research Scientists on a variety of research projects. Ideal candidates will have interests in machine learning, lasers/optics (LIDAR), IR Cameras, aerodynamics, environmental science, laboratory experiments and field testing, agentic AI/ML, software defined radio (SDR),  public/private cloud application engineering such as AWS, OpenStack, Kubernetes, and edge/mobile computing applications,  programming unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV/Drones) intelligent applications using embedded systems such as Raspberry Pi’s, Field Programmable Gated Arrays (FPGA), and sensors.   

These positions are for Federal Work Study awardees.  

Morning and afternoon work hours are welcome. 
 

Key Responsibilities  

  • Read and conduct project-related literature reviews 
     
  • Learn and apply several AI-related concepts  
     
  • Work with and learn from Research Scientist resulting in important contributions to various research projects 
     
  • Verbal and written communication regarding project progress 

 

Qualifications  

  • Must be a US Citizen 
     
  • Ideally, be an upperclassmen or graduate student with an engineering and/or computer science focus 
     
  • Eagerness and enthusiasm for learning new AI, engineering, and other research related concepts 
  • Once hired, you must be trained to handle project related information, and you must sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA).
