Location: Scottsdale, AZ
Duration: 10-12 weeks (Summer 2026)

This internship offers the opportunity to contribute to Discount Tire’s front line of defense in today’s dynamic cyber threat landscape. The selected intern will work alongside security engineers and analysts to help build and refine our detection and response capabilities, uncover and mitigate vulnerabilities, and document best practices that strengthen Discount Tire’s overall security posture. Projects will include developing mitigations for real-world attack techniques, leveraging automation and analytics to improve operational efficiency, and supporting efforts to measure program maturity through actionable metrics and documented best practices. This hands-on experience will provide valuable exposure to enterprise security operations and modern defensive strategies used to counter advanced adversaries targeting global organizations. As a Discount Tire Intern, you will have the opportunity to work with a team of experienced professionals and gain practical experience in a fast-paced, fun, and challenging environment. You will have access to senior leadership and visibility to multiple facets of the business of Information Technology, with a program mission of “providing high potential students’ knowledge and experience to guide them in future career decisions.” Additional program specific activities will provide team building opportunities and the requirement to present to senior leaders within the IT business segments.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Process Documentation
- Create clear, user-friendly documentation for key workflows and security protocols.
- Maintain a review framework to keep documentation current with evolving threats and technologies.
- Ensure all documentation complies with regulatory and industry standards.
- Security Operations & MDR Collaboration
- Collaborate with mentors and the MDR provider to understand threat monitoring, triage, and incident response.
- Analyze alerts and incidents to identify patterns and improve detection and response.
- Align threat activity with frameworks like MITRE ATT&CK and Cyber Kill Chain for better context.
- Establish feedback loops with MDR and internal teams to refine playbooks and response strategies.
- Support performance reporting on detection, response times, and operational effectiveness.
- Attack Surface Reduction
- Conduct vulnerability assessments under guidance from the security team.
- Prioritize remediation based on risk, impact, and threat intelligence.
- Recommend compensating controls when immediate fixes aren’t feasible.
- Deliver a remediation plan and implement solutions for at least one identified vulnerability.
Skills & Qualifications:
- Cybersecurity Skills:
- Basic understanding of cybersecurity frameworks and best practices (e.g., NIST)
- Familiarity with vulnerability scanning tools and techniques (e.g., Rapid7).
- Familiarity with security information and event management (SIEM) systems (e.g., Splunk, Sentinel).
- Awareness of threat detection and incident response processes
- Process and Documentation Skills:
- Ability to learn and use process documentation tools (e.g., Confluence or SharePoint).
- Willingness to develop skills in creating clear, organized, and actionable documentation.
- Data Analysis and Visualization Skills:
- Competence in using tools like Excel or similar tools for tracking and presenting data.
- Interested in learning data visualization platforms (e.g., Power BI) to develop performance gauges.
- General Technical Skills:
- Understanding of operational risk concepts, with mentorship and hands-on learning.
- Familiarity with coding (e.g. Python, PowerShell)
- Familiarity with IT systems.
Requirements:
- Currently enrolled in an accredited college or university, pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
- Must be a currently enrolled undergraduate student with a GPA of 3.5 or higher.
- Only Junior or Senior-level students or May 2026 graduates are eligible.
