The Department

The Energy Risk Management team is a part of the Rates, Planning, and Analysis Department, which works to sustain Tacoma Power’s financial strength and affordability. Energy Risk Management provides independent oversight of wholesale trading activities and develops decision support tools to help mitigate the financial risks of transacting in the wholesale energy market. These efforts support revenue stability in the face of market volatility.

The Energy Risk Management team has three primary functions:

  • Portfolio Risk Modeling develops and maintains advanced predictive models to simulate wholesale market dynamics, optimize hydro resource operations, and quantify financial risks for Tacoma Power.
  • Credit Risk Management safeguards Tacoma Power’s financial position by evaluating counterparty creditworthiness and managing exposure to potential losses from wholesale trading activities.
  • Risk Controls helps maintain the accuracy, reliability, and procedural compliance of wholesale trading activities through transaction validation, enforcing internal controls, and coordinating external confirmations.

As the Credit Risk Management Intern, you will play a key role in managing Tacoma Power’s financial risks of trading in the wholesale energy market, primarily by reviewing and evaluating the creditworthiness of our trading partners.
