Library Media Specialist

Position:  Library Media Specialist
Location:  High School
Required Certification:  Library Media Specialist
Start Date: March 2, 2026   

Job Summary:
The Library Media Specialist is responsible for managing and promoting the school library’s resources, assisting students and staff in accessing information, and fostering a love for reading and digital literacy. This role combines traditional library services with modern technology to enhance research and learning experiences.
Key Responsibilities:
Library Management & Collection Development

  • Select, acquire, catalog, and maintain a diverse collection of books, digital resources, and other media.
  • Organize and update library materials to ensure accessibility.
  • Promote reading programs, literacy initiatives, and educational resources to students and staff.

 
Instruction & Technology Integration

  • Teach information literacy, research skills, and responsible digital citizenship.
  • Assist students and staff in using library resources, databases, and technology effectively.
  • Collaborate with teachers to integrate library resources into the curriculum.

 
Student & Staff Support

  • Guide students in selecting appropriate reading and research materials.
  • Provide professional development and training to staff on library resources and technology tools.
  • Support differentiated learning by offering resources for all learning styles and abilities.

 
Library Programs & Community Engagement

  • Plan and execute literacy events, book fairs, author visits, and reading challenges.
  • Foster partnerships with parents, educators, and community organizations to support library initiatives.
  • Maintain a welcoming and inclusive environment that encourages lifelong learning.

 
Professional Development:

  • Participate in ongoing professional development opportunities to stay current with educational trends, teaching methodologies, and curriculum advancements. This includes attending workshops, seminars and professional meetings such as faculty and department/grade level meetings.
  • Collaborate with fellow teachers and staff to share best practices and enhance the overall learning experience for students.

  • Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal, Assistant Principal and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree and NYS Certification in Library Media Specialist
  • Strong knowledge of elementary curriculum, instructional strategies, and educational trends.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Patience, flexibility, and a genuine passion for working with children.
  • Ability to create a positive and inclusive learning environment.
