Director of Family Ministries 

Position Summary:
The Director of Family Ministries provides leadership, vision, and coordination for all children’s and youth ministries (ages 0-18) at Prairie Community Church. This part-time role (20 hours/week) oversees the development and implementation of Christian education, fellowship, and outreach programs that invite children and youth into a biblical community to become transformed, Christ-centered, relational, and passionate disciples of Jesus. The Director of Family Ministries balances maintaining existing programs with rebuilding and expanding the youth ministry, fostering spiritual growth, and equipping volunteers to share in ministry leadership.

PCC Mission and Vision:
The mission of Prairie Community Church is to invite people into a biblical community to become transformed followers of Jesus Christ. We aim for the spiritual formation of people who are Christ-centered, Bible-based, grace-filled, dependent on God, prayerful, joyful, and relational. The Director of Family Ministry exists to guide children and youth into a personal relationship with Jesus, help them grow in faith, serve others, and glorify God as they transition from maturing Christian children and students to maturing Christian adults.

Accountability:
The Director of Family Ministries is responsible to the Head of Staff and the Session. The Director serves as the Team Leader of all family activities and collaborates with other ministry staff as needed.

Qualifications

Personal: 

  • A personal commitment to Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and to His Church. 
  • Solid working knowledge of Scripture, with the ability to articulate the Bible’s story and their own faith journey. 
  • A disciple of Christ, relying on God’s Word and Spirit-led prayer for discernment and decision-making. 
  • A heart for children and youth, with a deep commitment to helping them grow in the grace and knowledge of Christ (2 Peter 3:18). 
  • Ability to relate to children and youth as a mentor and servant leader. 
  • Well-organized, capable of facilitating programs to completion, with strong communication, encouragement, and conflict resolution skills. 
  • A basic understanding of and teachable spirit regarding the ECO traditions. 
  • A desire to engage the community outside the church with the Gospel in relational ways to bridge PCC to all who need Jesus.

Educational/Experience: 

  • A four-year college degree is preferred, ideally in education, ministry, or a related field. 
  • Background and/or experience in Christian education or youth ministry is preferred.
  • A minimum of 4-5 years’ experience in children’s or youth ministry, with 2-3 years in a leadership position, is preferred. 
  • Note: PCC is committed to supporting the Director of Family Missions ongoing education, including paid study leave and financial assistance for tuition, transportation, and lodging costs, as feasible.

Primary Responsibilities:
The Director of Family Ministries is responsible for visioning, administering, coordinating, and shepherding the children’s and youth ministries of PCC, balancing direct leadership with delegation to volunteers. Responsibilities include:

  • Visioning and Strategic Planning: 
    • Through prayer, conversation, and observation, discern, cast, and communicate a vision and philosophy for children’s and youth ministries aligned with PCC’s mission. 
    • Analyze needs, establish objectives, design programs, and evaluate them periodically to ensure effectiveness. 
  • Administering and Coordinating Programs: 
    • Oversee all children’s and youth programs, for example: 
      • Sunday morning education (Kids’ Own Worship, Sunday Youth Gathering/Sr. High Small Group). 
      • Wednesday U-Nite programming (combined Jr/Sr High study, preschool curriculum for older nursery attendees). 
      • Seasonal and multigenerational events (e.g., Children’s Easter Saturday, family Christmas party, second Sunday in December children’s songs). 
      • Vacation Bible School (VBS), nursery program, and family-focused events. 
      • Confirmation (every 2-3 years, combining Youth Alpha and New Members Class). 
      • Special events (e.g., retreats/lock-ins with Hope Church, service/mission opportunities from local to international).
    • Coordinate the creation and alignment of digital/online curriculum for Sundays and Wednesdays, customizing lessons to enhance engagement and align with sermon series when feasible (e.g., Bible Lesson Reels). 
    • Facilitate filming of Bible Lesson Reels, coordinating children’s participation. 
    • Oversee childcare providers for small groups and studies, serving as the main contact and assisting with substitute coordination.
  • Organizing and Shepherding: 
    • Students and Families: 
      • Plan and implement activities that invite and guide children and youth to know Jesus as their Savior, targeting both church members and the broader community (e.g., Youth Alpha, retreats, service opportunities). 
      • Foster organic relationships between youth and maturing Christian adults to support faith growth. 
      • Create opportunities for youth to serve others as disciples, engaging in PCC’s ministry and community outreach. 
      • Support the transition from maturing Christian children/youth to maturing Christian adults. 
      • Know at least 80% of students’ and parents’ names on the rolls. 
      • Be present at student events (on/off-site), encouraging participation in worship and leadership opportunities through invitation and modeling. 
      • Stay informed about victories, concerns, or challenges faced by children, youth, and their families, passing information to leaders for follow-up as appropriate.
    • Program Leaders and Volunteers: 
      • Recruit, resource, and maintain a network of adult volunteers to plan, coordinate, and lead programs, balancing direct leadership with delegation. 
      • Ensure all volunteers and program leaders complete background checks and training before involvement. 
      • Meet monthly with program leaders and annually (with quarterly check-ins) with weekly volunteers to provide feedback, encouragement, and support. 
      • Provide leadership training and resources to equip volunteers to effectively lead their teams. 
      • Support volunteers’ personal spiritual growth.
    • Team Building: 
      • Gather all volunteers twice yearly to nurture, train, and encourage them to fulfill their roles with love for God, students, and clarity of vision.

Yearly Goals and Evaluation:
The Director of Family Ministries will write work and personal goals in December for the coming year. Annual performance evaluations will be conducted by the Senior Pastor and Personnel Committee. The Personnel Committee will review the adequacy of compensation prior to annual budget preparation.
