Digitization and GIS Intern

Digitization and GIS Student Internship 
 

The American Geographical Society Library seeks a student intern to assist with Digitization and Geospatial Data Services under the supervision of the Geospatial Information Librarian.  Those with interests in librarianship, digitization, metadata, and /or web GIS technology are especially encouraged to apply. 

The team manages a GIS data collection, assists students and researchers in finding and using geospatial data, digitizes AGSL maps, and works on various projects utilizing geospatial technologies to increase access to and use of collections. The American Geographical Society Library, one department in the UWM Libraries Distinctive Collections, is a research library including maps, atlases, globes, monographs, photographs, and geospatial data supporting instruction, research and learning at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and the public. 

 
Duties include:  

Individual and collaborative projects relevant to their own skills, academic goals, and needs of the AGSL 

Capturing high-quality digital images of AGSL materials using a large-format scanner 

Facilitating requests for spatial data, digital images, and large-format printing for students, faculty, researchers, and the public  

Performing other library tasks as assigned such as greeting visitors, giving directions, answering phones, responding to e-mails, and referring users to appropriate subject experts  

 

Time and Schedule Requirements: 
10-15 hours per week during the Spring and Fall semesters and 10-25 hours per week during the summer. Student interns work a fixed schedule each week within the AGSL’s operating hours: Monday through Friday, 9:00am to 4:30pm.  The ideal candidate will be available for the Spring 2026 with preference for those available for Fall 2026 and beyond.  This is a paid internship starting at $12/hr.

 

Required Qualifications: (You must meet all these qualifications) 

Enrolled and in good standing at any college or university 

Interest in libraries, geography, and technology

Perform routine tasks using a Windows PC, Microsoft Office, Office365 such as copying files, drafting documents, writing professional e-mails, etc. 

Complete detailed work with a high degree of consistency and accuracy 

Respectfully and effectively work with diverse students, patrons, and staff 

Solve problems independently as well as collaboratively 

Interest in learning to use new digital tools, software, and hardware 

 

Desired Qualifications: (You should meet some of the following qualifications) 

Graduate student or advanced undergraduate 

Perform routine GIS tasks (equivalent to one introductory GIS course) 

Experience searching for and using geospatial data 

Experience using scanners or other types of digitization technologies 

Experience or interest in learning Adobe Creative Cloud, JavaScript, Python, XML, and/or HTML/CSS 

Experience or interest in learning Git, GitHub, GitLab, and/or GitHub Pages 

Proficiency in language(s) other than English
