Job Title:   Behavioral Health Technician (BH Tech) 
 

Supervised by:   Behavioral Health Technician Supervisor 
 

Supervises:  None 
 

Salary Range:  $18.50 – $26.50 / hour 
 

FLSA Status:  Exempt 
 

Category 1:  Unrestricted Access to PHI 
 


 

SUMMARY:   
 

The Behavioral Health Technician (BHT) is responsible for maintaining a safe, therapeutic environment in the program with an emphasis on high quality service and client satisfaction.  This position also conducts a wide variety of tasks and responsibilities in supporting the day-to-day operations, client support and clinical services of the program.  
 


 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 
 

· Provides daily client support in collaboration with the multi-disciplinary team. 
 

· Responsible for ensuring clients follow the daily schedule including times for groups, meals, medications, scheduled recreation, educational activities, counseling, case management sessions, waking and bed times and break times.  
 

· Facilitates non-clinical educational groups and activities under the direction and guidance of the Clinical Director according to program schedule. 
 

· Coordinates and oversees clients during scheduled recreational activities, outdoor recreational time and recreational groups. 
 

· Assists with admission and discharge procedures as needed, including, but not limited to conducting searches of clients and their belongings, collecting urine samples, reviewing medications, orienting new clients and assisting them in settling into the program. 
 

· Prepares urine samples and associated documentation for pick-up of urine samples for delivery to the lab as needed. 
 

· Conducts hourly head counts and client safety checks as directed. 
 

· Observes and demonstrates respectful and courteous demeanor when communicating with clients, referral sources, parents/guardians, co-workers and visitors at all times 
 

· Assists with meal set-up, serving, cleanup, food deliveries, food storage, maintaining temperatures on delivered meals and ensuring ample snacks and drinks available to clients throughout the day. 
 

· Provides transportation for clients as needed documenting trips in the daily vehicle log. 
 

· Assists with minor cleaning, organizing, and other tasks to help ensure a professional-looking program environment.  Supports clients in cleaning their rooms as needed. 
 

· Maintains an awareness of the safety and security of the facility and refers potential risks and client concerns to a supervisor immediately. 
 

· Utilizes principals in de-escalation of potential crisis situations according to their training. 
 

· Maintains adequate knowledge of the program’s emergency preparedness plan and emergency procedures. 
 

· Consistently arrives for work on time and adheres to the program’s attendance policies. 
 

· Demonstrates the ability to prioritize tasks and responsibilities and complete duties in the allotted time. 
 

· Observes the self-administration of medications by clients as necessary and completes all medication self-administration documentation accurately.

· Participates in and completes all required mandatory training. 
 

· Performs other related duties as assigned. 
 


 

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
 

· High School Diploma or equivalent required 
 

· Experience working in the mental health, substance abuse treatment or human service field preferred 
 

· Experience working with adolescents is highly desirable 
 

· Must display the use of appropriate independent judgment to determine appropriate course of action in resolving problems and in emergencies 
 

· Must have excellent verbal, social and writing skills   
 

· Must have basic ability in use of computers to be able make entries and utilize electronic health records 
 

· Must have a valid driver’s license and clean driving record for the past 3 years 
 


 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:   
 

Employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, reach, bend over, talk and hear or otherwise perform any number of physical activities that may be required in completing daily tasks. Candidate may be asked to lift as much as 25 pounds while completing essential duties and responsibilities of the position. 
 


 

LANGUAGE SKILLS: 
 

Must be able to express self adequately in written and oral communication and to communicate effectively in an interdisciplinary, culturally diverse setting with clients, families, staff and regulatory agencies. 
 


 

CONTINUING EDUCATION: 
 

Must attend annual mandatory in-service and education programs.  Must complete education required for maintenance of professional certification or licensure.
