Design Technician Trainee Engineering

This entry-level Truss Designer in Training (DIT) role offers a structured pathway into a career in multifamily component design with a focus on roof and floor trusses. Trainees will undergo a 16-week program designed to develop critical skills in blueprint reading, truss layout, and 2D-to-3D modeling using MiTek (and some Alpine) software.

 

You'll work under the supervision of a design manager and alongside experienced designers, gaining hands-on exposure to the complete truss design process—from interpreting plans to producing layouts and providing job site support.

 

Key Expectations: 

  • Under the supervision of a design manager, completes all phases of the Truss Designer training program.
  • In partnership with more senior designers, prepares basic roof and/or floor truss designs by reading and interpreting blueprints and conferring with sales and/or customers regarding general details of the job requirement.
  • Computes plan dimensions and enters design parameters and layouts per plan into specialized designing software.
  • Review plans with experienced designers to ensure they are accurate and conform to standards.
  • Produce truss placement layouts for final construction.
  • Provide job site support, with the aid of sales associates or senior designers, when requested.
  • Learn pricing methods and draft bid proposals.
  • Prepare for and take a series of tests required for certification.
  • Upon completion of the 16-week training, DIT is expected to be able to design an accurate, simple one-story structure.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Learn to design trusses from 2D blueprints into 3D models using MiTek
  • Compute plan dimensions and input data into design software
  • Review designs for accuracy with senior team members
  • Produce truss placement layouts for construction
  • Prepare bid proposals and learn pricing methods
  • Pass the TT1 certification test by program’s end

 

Ideal Candidate:

  • Has strong spatial awareness and time management skills
  • Communicates effectively with teams and clients
  • Experience with CAD or similar design software preferred
  • Prior framing, construction, or shop experience is a plus 

 

Associate’s degree or relevant hands-on experience in construction/design or combination of experience
