MDAAP Pediatric Innovation in Volunteerism, Outreach, and Training (PIVOT) Program

The Maryland Chapter, American Academy of Pediatrics (MDAAP) – in partnership with the AAP chapters in Virginia and Washington, DC – are participating in the Pediatric Innovation in Volunteerism, Outreach, and Training (PIVOT) Program funded by a Healthy People 2030 grant from the National American Academy of Pediatrics. The aim of the PIVOT program is to connect high school and college students with pediatric professionals, promoting child health advocacy, leadership, and clinical engagement. By participating in chapter activities and shadowing pediatricians and pediatric healthcare providers, students will gain experience addressing critical child health issues, including youth mental health, food insecurity, substance use prevention, and school health.

The MDAAP has had a long and distinguished history of advocacy and support of Maryland children and their health care needs; for more information, go to www.mdaap.org. The MDAAP initiates and supports numerous programs that respond to the needs of children. If you are a college student in Maryland and wish to participate in the PIVOT Program, you will be offered opportunities to participate in MDAAP in-person and online meetings; assist MDAAP staff with projects, initiatives, and social media accounts; and shadow MDAAP pediatricians and pediatric healthcare providers in clinical settings with patients and families. The PIVOT Program runs now through June 30, 2026. A stipend is available for your participation in the PIVOT Program.

Please contact Loretta I. Hoepfner, MDAAP Executive Director at loretta@mdaap.org by Friday, November 21, 2025, with you email and telephone number if you are interested in participating in the PIVOT Program with the MDAAP or if you have any questions.
