2026 - Sales Operation Intern

WHO WE ARE

 

 

 

As an intern in the Sales Operations department for the Metro Transit division, you will have the opportunity to help support and coordinate our sales and customer engagement efforts for public transit at stadium venues around the Twin Cities. Our program supports Metro Transit operations by assisting customers with purchasing fares, providing guidance on how to navigate public transit, and maintaining efficient crowd management procedures for boarding Metro Light Rail Lines after events. In this position, you will work with current and retired Metro Transit employees from around the organization that sign up to help support frontline operations. You will also be a part of a team of Sales Operations interns that you will work together with throughout the internship. The events we support include the Twins at Target Field, Vikings & Concerts at US Bank Stadium, Gophers Football at Huntington Bank Stadium, and Minnesota United FC at Allianz Field.

Internship Information:

  • Length: Summer with a chance to extend for up to 2 years
  • Hours: Full-time Summer, June – August, and Part-time during the school year
  • Start Date: 03/28/2026
  • Location: Minneapolis

NOTE:  This is an onsite, in-person position.

What does an internship with the Metropolitan Council entail?
Our internships are designed to provide students meaningful work, be an introduction to public service and a chance to discover the Metropolitan Council.

Who is the Metropolitan Council?

The Metropolitan Councils made up of several operating divisions that service the Twin Cities Metropolitan area in a number of ways.
 

  • Metro Transit provides bus and light rail public transportation for the greater metropolitan area
  • Metropolitan Council Environmental Services (MCES) manages wastewater treatment plants and the regional wastewater collection system for the seven-county metropolitan region
  • Community Development is responsible for helping the Council shape its regional growth plan and Metro HRA provides affordable housing programs in the region
  • Metropolitan Transportation Services (MTS) is responsible for the transportation planning functions as the Twin Cities metropolitan planning organization (MPO) for transportation
  • Regional Administration provides support services (Finance, Payroll, HR, etc.) for the Council

 

What you would do in this job

 

 

 

  • Assist with organizing staff and resources for fare sales, customer engagement, and crowd management procedures for boarding light rail transit after events at stadium venues.
  • Assist Metro Transit riders at light rail stations near park & ride locations and stadium venues with purchasing fares, navigating the transit system, and general wayfinding.
  • Learn about Metro Transit Sales Operations and gain fundamental experience with directing staff, report writing, sales reporting, data collection/analysis, and program administration

 

What education and experience are required for this job (minimum qualifications)

 

 

 

  • Must be enrolled in an undergraduate degree seeking program (Associate's or Bachelor's) 
  • Candidate's residence must be in Minnesota or Wisconsin during the internship. 
  • An UNOFFICIAL transcript is required to be attached to application. 
  • Have a valid driver's license
  • Must be able to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.

     

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
 

  • Interested in working with people and teams
  • Leadership or customer service experience
  • Ability to work independently on tasks and projects


DEGREE PROGRAM/AREA OF STUDY PREFERRED
 

  • Business Administration & Management, Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, Geography, Economics, Accounting, Finance, Hospitality, or related field

If you are new to the Metropolitan Council, you must pass a drug test (safety sensitive positions only), and a background check which verifies education, employment, and criminal history.  A driving record check and/or physical may be conducted if applicable to the job.  If you have a criminal conviction, you do not automatically fail. The Metropolitan Council considers felony, gross misdemeanor and misdemeanor convictions on a case-by-case basis, based on whether they are related to the job and whether the candidate has demonstrated adequate rehabilitation.
