MEDICAL ASSISTANT/LPN - Preventive Health Clinic
 

Purpose of Job

The purpose of this classification is to provide basic patient care or treatments as well as certain administrative duties.

Essential Functions

The Medical Assistant/Licensed Practical Nurse-Preventive Health is responsible for the following essential functions:

  • Prepare patients for medical treatments under direct supervision of clinical nurse program manager, nurses and nurse practitioners
  • Take and record temperature, blood pressure, pulse, and respiration rate and prepare examination room
  • Collect health information and accurately document in electronic health record system
  • Administer vaccinations and other injections as needed
  • Issue medications prescribed by provider
  • Perform phlebotomy and specimen packing and transport
  • Observe patients and report adverse reactions to medical personnel in charge
  • Sterilize equipment and supplies
  • Communicate moderately complex information to coworkers and patients
  • Maintains knowledge of legal limitations while performing job functions.
  • Participates in continuing education programs, attends of in-service training annually; attends mandatory CPR class yearly; attends regular staff meetings
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the clinical manager

Additional Job Functions

  • Respond to and report immediately if called upon by local, regional or central office supervisors, as part of a coordinated emergency response by the Knox County Mayor’s Office
  • Ensure regular, punctual attendance during scheduled work hours
  • Perform other duties as required

Minimum Training & Qualifications

  • The position requires a vocational/technical school diploma from an accredited Medical Assistant (MA) program and one to three years’ related experience
  • If the incumbent is an MA, must meet American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) requirements and maintain state and professional certification requirements, if the incumbent is an LPN, must engage in continuing education to meet state and professional licensing requirements and maintain an active license with the Tennessee Board of Nursing

Specialized Knowledge

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification

Physical Requirements

  • May have to physically assist/move patients. Must be physically able to operate a variety of office machines, such as a computer, printer, copy machine, facsimile machine, calculator, telephone, overhead projector, and VCR. Must be able to use body members to work, move or carry objects or materials.
