Student Animal Care Technician

6. Job description Students will be provided appropriate training in accordance with a schedule established with the UARV Director prior to performing these duties:

1. Provide care to animals, observe, and report changes in the health status or condition of animals to the UARV Director.
2. Receive animals from approved vendors and exporting institutions into the appropriate caging and provide accurate animal identification.
3. Feed and water animals.
4. With the direction of the UARV Director, provide care and housing in accordance with active IACUC protocols.
5. Perform general recordkeeping for work duties and maintain cleanliness and sanitation of animal cages and facility.
6. Operate cage washing equipment and other types of cleaning and sanitizing equipment.
7. Under the direction of the UARV Director, students may collect biological specimens from animals.
8. Performs other duties as assigned by the UARV Director.

1. Desired skills and qualifications Students should be working toward a major in a Science or Engineering field.  Students perform well at this position if they have an attention to detail, are timely, communicative, inquisitive, like to clean, and are enthusiastic about animal care and welfare. Prior experience in a similar position is not necessary – you will be trained on everything!
2. What skills will the student develop? The student will gain valuable exposure to different types of faculty research, gain understanding about research regulations imposed on both a local and federal level, and obtain familiarization with animal care and procedures for multiple species. Students are encouraged to observe technical procedures whenever possible, including but not limited to sentinel testing, surgeries, behavioral studies, etc.
3. Regular Student Employment or Federal Work Study or Both? Federal Work Study preferred, but not required. To check eligibility for FWS funds please check your financial aid awards found on your student center.
4. Pay Rate $12.00/hour
5. Hours / week ~ 5-10 hours/week, up to 29 hours during the holidays and breaks (depending on available work).
