POSITION OVERVIEW:

The school counselor coordinates, collaborates, and consults with staff, parents, and the community to assist students and provides leadership in addressing non-academic barriers to student achievement.

80% or more of a school counselor's time will be direct and/ or indirect services to students. 20% or less of a school counselor’s time will be spent on system support (program management and operations, professional development, data analysis, fair-share responsibilities, such as program coordination).   All school counselors will follow the Ohio Standards for school counselors.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

The statements below are intended to describe the general nature and scope of work being performed by this position. This is not a complete listing of all responsibilities, duties, and/or skills required. Other duties may be assigned.

 

 

·       Analyzes data and develops and implements a School Counseling Plan that includes individual and small group

·       Counseling, classroom guidance lessons and parent engagement.

·       Provide individual brief solution-focused counseling to address immediate barriers to student learning.

·       Promote personal/social growth and career/college awareness.

·       Facilitates referral of students to community-based counseling services as needed.

·       Provides crisis intervention during emergencies, including grief counseling for students and/or staff.

·       Communicates to students and parents the available educational options that will allow their student to matriculate to the next grade level.

·       Attends and participates in professional growth activities.

 

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

·       Master’s degree in School Counseling.

·       Valid Ohio School Counseling License or Temporary Pupil Services License

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

·       Demonstrated knowledge of State and Federal guidelines pertaining to students with disabilities.

·       Skills necessary to provide support intervention specialist grades K-12.

·       Interpersonal skills necessary to communicate effectively and work collaboratively with parents, families, schools, staff members, and other related school personnel.

·       Strong written and verbal communications skills, including ability to provide staff training for instructional strategies and compliance.

·       Strong organizational skills to meet compliance needs according to State and Federal mandates for students with disabilities.

·       Computer skills necessary to maintain departmental records, documents and reports.

 

 

 

PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:

·       Tools/Equipment Use: Desktop PC with keyboard and mouse, laptop, scanner, calculator, software, desk, and adjustable chair.

·       Posture: Prolonged sitting and standing; occasional stooping, bending, squatting, kneeling, bending, pushing, pulling and twisting.

·       Motion: Frequent repetitive hand motions, including keyboarding and use of a mouse; occasional reaching

·       Lifting: Occasional lifting and carrying (less than 10 pounds)

·       Environment: Works in office setting; may require occasional irregular hours and/or prolonged hours.

·       Attendance: Regular and punctual attendance at the worksite is required for this position.

·       Mental Demands: Maintains emotional control under stress; works with frequent interruptions.
