Veterinary Technician Spring Extern

Working under the supervision of our Veterinarian, Certified Veterinary Technician, and Animal Care Team, you'll help provide professional medical services to injured and orphaned native wildlife while learning about best practices in wildlife care and medicine. We're offering an exciting Veterinary Technician Externship opportunity for a dedicated student to gain hands-on experience in wildlife medicine and rehabilitation.

What You'll Do

  • Provide routine and emergency care to a wide variety of native wildlife species, including birds, mammals, and reptiles while following established medical protocols.
  • Assist in medical, diagnostic, and surgical procedures to support the health and well-being of patients.
  • Participate in euthanasia and postmortem examinations when appropriate for animal welfare or diagnostic purposes.
  • Maintain accurate medical and procedural records.
  • Perform daily husbandry duties, including cleaning, feeding, and monitoring patient enclosures.
  • Follow all safety and biosecurity policies to ensure a safe and efficient work environment.
  • Collaborate with staff and volunteers in a positive, team-oriented setting.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • Must be 18 years of age or older at the time of hire.
  • Current enrollment with completion of the first year (1) of degree in Veterinary Technician Program (CVT) from an accredited institution.
  • Illinois professional veterinary licensure in good standing may be required.
  • Valid Driver's License in good standing.
  • Experience in observing, safely handling, restraining, and transporting birds, mammals, and reptiles preferred.
  • Knowledge of native and wild fauna identification.
  • Knowledge of basic veterinary techniques.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated success in establishing and maintaining productive working relationships.
  • Strong organizational skills to maintain accurate records and data.

Schedule & Compensation

  • Dates: Mid-March through Mid-May 2026
  • Schedule: Four 10-hour days per week, including one weekend day (schedule may vary)
  • Pay: $16/hour

Uniform & Work Environment

  • Provided: Scrub tops for the duration of the externship
  • Student Provides: Scrub bottoms or workwear pants and sturdy work shoes (hiking boots or similar recommended)
  • Work involves direct contact with wildlife in a rehabilitation setting, both indoors and outdoors, in all weather conditions.

Location: DuPage Wildlife Conservation Center at Willowbrook Forest Preserve.
