Student Assistant (Data Center Services), Ref# 9900

ITS will not offer permanent employment to any candidate unless the candidate provides documentation that they are authorized to accept work in the United States on a permanent basis. Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be a US citizen or foreign national eligible to work in the United States
  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Must be currently attending a New York State college, university or graduate program, or be a resident of New York State attending a college, university or graduate program outside of New York State
  • Must have completed a minimum of one (1) year as a student at a degree-granting two or four-year college or university (completion of one year’s worth of academic credits over a more extended period of time may qualify part-time students) OR currently enrolled graduate student or accepted in a graduate degree program
  • Must have a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 or equivalent to a C.

 

Duties Description

Under the direction of the Director of Data Center Service (DCS), the Student Assistant position will be a part of the DCS Unix team. The candidate must be able to multi-task and work under pressure to yield high quality results in a short time frame. Specific duties include, but are not limited to:
• Perform installation, administration, testing, and maintenance of SPARC hardware and Solaris operating systems.
• Develop, prepares, and assists with documentation preparation for the system, including run books for computer operations staff, procedural manuals and on-line help instructions for users, and technical documentation manuals for IT staff.
• Ensure that repair and preventative maintenance procedures are followed for the agency's SPARC hardware and Solaris operating systems.
• May coordinate with vendors in the installation, administration, testing, and maintenance of SPARC hardware and Solaris operating systems.
• Support development and implementation of technology solutions to improve Solaris server access, response, and stability.
• Participate in meetings and works with agency management, users, vendors, consultants, and IT staff to discuss IT solution options and assists in recommending appropriate system platforms for meeting program requirements.
• Collaborate and communicates effectively with NYS ITS staff, external agency staff, project managers, and executive level staff.
• Work with ITS and external agency staff to support the appropriate deployment and operation of IT systems in the Solaris environment.
• Document systems and procedures appropriately, meets NYS OITS standards, and follows generally accepted IT practices.

Preferred Skills:
Working knowledge of Unix/Linux operating systems
Working knowledge of virtualization
Working knowledge of network technologies
Reading and Writing technical documentation
Working knowledge of secure protocols
