Shared Clinical Learning in Uganda

Shared Clinical Learning (SCL) is an immersive, in-person global health program located in Jinja, Uganda, and organized by Empower Through Health (ETH) — a U.S.-registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with a strong track record of conducting clinical training and research fellowships for American students in Eastern Uganda. ETH partners with Jinja Regional Referral Hospital, a major teaching and referral facility serving over two million people.

This unique international learning opportunity is designed for pre-med, medical, nursing, midwifery, and public health students who want to gain firsthand experience in clinical care and global health practice. Participants engage in daily hospital rounds, case discussions, and structured reflection sessions alongside Ugandan peers, gaining deep insight into how culture, systems, and resources shape healthcare delivery in a low-resource setting.

Program Benefits:

  • Build hands-on clinical and cultural experience in one of Uganda’s busiest regional hospitals.
  • Learn directly from local physicians, nurses, and midwives, while collaborating with Ugandan students.
  • Live in safe, shared accommodation at Nile River Explorers, located at the banks of the Nile River in Jinja.
  • Enjoy flexibility — you can stay a minimum of one week, with open-ended extensions possible.
  • As an optional Trip Leader, you may coordinate group logistics and lead fundraising for hospital donations, gaining leadership experience in global health.

Essential Skills:
Ideal candidates demonstrate strong cultural humility, adaptability, and curiosity about healthcare in global contexts. Applicants should possess effective communication and teamwork skills, a commitment to ethical practice, and the ability to reflect critically on diverse approaches to medicine and health systems. Prior clinical experience is not required — openness to learning and collaboration across disciplines is key.

This is an educational experience and does not require work authorization.
