Spring 2026 Planning & Zoning Co-op
General Description
This position involves intern-level city planning work for a community working hard to revitalize itself. Intern will have the opportunity to be involved in a wide variety of projects. The intern will work with the Planning Department as well as other City Departments like Building, Health, Engineering and Economic Development. Duties include but are not limited to:
- Working with Planning customers
- Planning and economic development project research and development
- Supporting the needs of the Planning Commission, Board of Zoning Appeals, and Architectural Design Review Board
- Working with the Land Bank
- Grant writing
Essential Job Functions
- The specific nature of tasks will vary greatly with the field of study. Examples might include students in programs which include: Public Administration, Clerical fields, Computer Sciences, Drafting, Engineering, City Planning and Architecture, Environmental and laboratory technical programs, and many others.
- Performs tasks designed to provide a hands-on exposure to the work field which has been chosen by the student.
- May respond to telephone inquiries and provide information; may handle routine clerical functions for the work unit.
- May gather, compile or display information. May be assigned to a research or information-gathering task.
- Assists a supervisor on varied tasks of a more advanced nature. In technical fields, may be assigned to a particular project with responsibility for many steps within the project.
- May perform diverse, clerical tasks and/or data entry.
Skills/Knowledges/Abilities
- Must be willing to learn, to accept instructions and directions and to follow through by using learned knowledge.
- Must be courteous with the public and with other employees.
- Must adhere to established hours of work and guidelines for attendance, reporting of absences, or other office routines.
Training/Education/Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- This person should be registered in a program of cooperative education. That program must have logical relationship to the particular work tasks of the assignment.
- The ability to work for 8-40 hours a week for at least 6 weeks.
PREFERED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Possession of a valid driver's license is preferred.
