R&D UX/Usability Engineer

Responsibilities

Looking for a challenging role in UX design and usability engineering? You will have a key role in UX design of next-generation products. You will design and review complex interfaces for hardware and software applications as well as unique multi-product solutions. As part of a central team, you will collaborate with project teams to ensure usability and positive user experience for our engineering customers.

 

Responsibilities

  • Plan, lead, and coordinate UX, usability and user-centered design activities for hardware instruments, software, and solutions. Tailor activities for existing projects.
  • Plan and conduct usability tests and provide reports with prioritized recommendations.
  • Conduct research to inform/ to enable data-driven decisions.
  • Gain a basic understanding of numerous product/solution technologies over time (for example, how a class of test instruments is used, customer use cases)
  • Conduct activities such as Persona development, mental model exploration, and task flow analysis or journey mapping for new UI design requirements.
  • Create new UI designs from early concepts through wireframes and interactive UI prototypes.
  • Foster teamwork and innovation to create designs within a given UI Standard, Style Guide, and framework. Promote and advise teams on the UI Standard.
  • Assist with completion and ongoing updates of the design system documentation. Collaborate with software developers on requirements definition and design hand-off.
  • Consult with partners to influence design for target personas, and to implement usability recommendations. Review a broad range of designs for usability and UI standards and give recommendations for UX improvement.
  • Plan and conduct usability tests and provide reports with prioritized recommendations.
  • Perform in a fast-paced environment of agile software development.
  • Embrace new methods and technologies for UX design.
  • Assist the Senior/UX Lead with given assignments.

 


Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Human Factors or Usability Engineering, Human Computer Interaction, Cognitive Psychology, or similar program for UX design, preferably from a college of engineering
    • Master’s candidates or Bachelor’s degree in Human Factors or Human Computer Interaction may be considered with a proven track record.
  • 2 to 4+ years’ experience spanning all phases of user-centered design.
  • Rapid UI prototyping with tools such as Figma, Axure, or others
  • Working knowledge of UX design systems, UI component libraries and agile development.
  • Prefer UX design experience with high-tech or complex systems.
  • Must have strong aptitude for technical domains and complex information architecture.
  • Experience with design of UI for usability and simplicity.
  • Experience collaborating with software development teams and collaborating with other stakeholders. Conviction to advocate for UX and design for usability.
  • Experience with Touch UI design and working knowledge of ergonomics. Mobile app experience is desirable.
  • Working knowledge of human factors including cognitive psychology, perception, and design for color vision impairment
  • Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills
  • Must be team-oriented, willing to learn, and willing to work onsite in Santa Rosa, California.
  • Must be a US Person.
