ABOUT UPWARD BOUND MATH SCIENCE
Located in the scenic mountains of Western Maryland, the Upward Bound Math Science (UBMS) Program at Frostburg State University is one of nearly 200 federally funded pre-college programs designed to strengthen the math and science skills of participating students. The program's goal is to help students recognize and develop their potential to excel in math and science and to encourage them to pursue postsecondary degrees in these fields, ultimately leading them to pursue careers in the math and science professions. The UBMS program serves 70 participants attending eight high schools in Allegany, Washington, and Frederick counties, and three high schools in Baltimore City.
ABOUT THE SUMMER RESIDENTIAL PROGRAM
The Summer Residential Program runs for six weeks. Students participate in either a 2-week (introductory), 3-week (intermediate) or 5-week (advanced) program. Students attend academic classes and participate in various activities daily. Rising seniors also participate in Senior Week, which provides information on college applications, financial aid, and other relevant topics.
UBMS offers a strong, challenging summer curriculum built around a carefully selected STEM theme, integrated into academic classes and trip experiences. Students receive instruction in mathematics, science, literature, writing, and Greek/Latin. Students also attend classes or workshops in research methods, college and career planning, PSAT/SAT prep, and computer applications. Students also participate in educational activities and field trips.
Students live in the residence halls in small groups (Sunday through Friday), and a Tutor/Counselor heads each group. Among their many responsibilities, the Tutor/Counselors assist the classroom teachers, provide tutoring, supervise meals, plan and organize evening activities, and more. The Head Resident supervises all Tutor/Counselors and students in the residence hall and during all activities outside of the classroom.
