Position Summary (include Description of Work Unit and Position Summary):
A Geologic and Soil Resources Inventory Project Coordinator position is available with Colorado State University to be located in the Geologic Resources Division of the National Park Service which is based in Lakewood, Colorado (or remotely). The incumbent of this position is a member of the core team responsible for carrying out the Geologic and Soil Resources Inventory where many parks lack sufficient staff to collect, manage, and synthesize scientific information needed to manage geologic resources and geologic hazards.
This position will be based in Lakewood, CO or remotely. Within easy reach are myriad trails for hiking, mountain biking, wildlife watching, horseback riding, and back-country skiing on a plethora of public lands, including nearby National Parks, Forests, and Grasslands, and countless local natural areas. Denver also has a vibrant cultural scene, with many options for enjoying theater productions, music events, annual festivals, museums, art galleries, restaurants, gardens, and more.
The incumbent coordinates the activities involved with all phases of geologic and soil inventory projects. The incumbent provides direction, oversight, and guidance in the management and dissemination of inventory and monitoring-related information. This program may include, but is not limited to soils, geology, hydrology, paleontology, geothermal features and activity, caves and karst, erosion, natural hazards. The incumbent will need to have professional level experience in being able to perform and evaluate scientific work in natural resource management and work involving the analysis of geologic and soils data to address resource protection and mitigate the impacts of geologic hazards. The incumbent leads the effort to develop geologic reports which help guide parks in the management of their most pressing geologic resource stewardship issues and aid in the interpretation of digital geologic maps.
Minimum Requirements:
- B.S./B.A. + 5 years related experience, or MA + 2 years’ experience, or PhD.
- Expert professional knowledge of geology and geologic resource management on public lands.
- Professional experience developing and reviewing reports for geologic resource management.
- Mastery of scientific inventory project principles and research techniques.
- Ability to effectively plan, coordinate, and provide leadership to a team of scientists, data managers, and technical specialists in all phases of complex, multi-year projects of various spatial scales.
- Ability to manage long-term projects designed to inventory key geologic resources at park units.
- Advanced professional knowledge and skill in geologic data analysis and synthesis to develop understanding of, and solutions to, geologic resource problems.
- Knowledge of the laws pertaining to geologic and soil resources.
- Ability to prepare reports and journal articles of high scientific credibility, and to share pertinent information effectively with both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Ability to make oral presentations that are well designed, informative, and clearly convey the intended message.
- Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license by the employment start date.
Preferred Job Qualifications:
- Preferred education is a Master of Science (M.S.) in geology.
- At least one year of experience with geologic and/or soil resource management in National Parks or other public lands.
- Knowledge of geologic and soil resource-related Department of Interior – National Park Service Management Policies (2006) and service-specific manuals, instructions, and/or directors orders.
- Ability to create or supervise the creation of science communication products from geologic and soil inventory projects and disseminate appropriately.
- Thorough understanding of laws, regulations, policies, and guidelines related to NPS natural resource inventory and monitoring and the protection of the nation’s natural and cultural resources.
- Skill in oral and written communication to ensure that inventory reports are well written and easily understood.
