Available Positions:
- Maintenance and Technology
The Maintenance & Technology area is responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of the Student Union and equipment within. These responsibilities include lighting, drywall, painting, furniture repair, preventive maintenance, plumbing, equipment repair and maintenance, computers, and audio-visual equipment.
- Operations and Event Support
The Jean Hower Taber Student Union Operations & Event Support team is a team comprised of both professional and student staff who are ready to assist with each event in the building. With their operating location in Suite 306 on the 3rd floor of the JHTSU, this group is conveniently located for quick access to guests when they arrive at their event space. This team is uniquely skilled to satisfy both the physical set-up needs, as well as any A/V needs each group may have before or during an event.
- Roo Lounge
Located on the first floor of the Student Union, the Roo Lounge provides entertainment and a fun, social environment for all students, faculty, staff, guests, and visitors. Services offered include: 8 bowling lanes, 13 billiards tables, a gaming area, great music, and a great time with friends! As a part of this team, employees will gain skills and experience in customer service, troubleshooting, fiscal management, and knowledge of an array of gaming equipment.
- Welcome Center:
The Welcome Center is responsible for greeting and directing guests and visitors throughout the Student Union and campus. Student employees execute the daily operations of the Welcome Center, which include assisting internal/external clients of the Student Union; acting as a "Lost and Found;" creating signage for events; and performing other tasks as assigned. The Welcome Center is located on the second floor of the Student Union.
Position Responsibilities:
Maintenance & Technology Specialist
- Perform routine maintenance tasks including lighting checks, drywall repairs, painting, and furniture maintenance.
- Conduct preventive maintenance of equipment and systems within the Student Union.
- Repair and maintain plumbing fixtures and systems.
- Troubleshoot and repair various equipment including computers, and audiovisual equipment.
- Assist with setup and maintenance of technology-related needs for events and programs.
Operations & Event Support Specialist
- Coordinate room configurations according to event requirements, including seating arrangements, stage setup, and audiovisual needs.
- Ensure timely setup and teardown of equipment and furniture for events.
- Provide technical support for audiovisual equipment during events, including troubleshooting and operation.
- Conduct routine checks of building facilities to ensure safety and functionality.
- Assist with emergency procedures and evacuations as needed.
- Oversee cleanliness and organization of event spaces before, during, and after events.
Roo Lounge Entertainment Specialist
- Provide entertainment services including bowling, billiards, and gaming for students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
- Ensure a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere in the Roo Lounge.
- Assist patrons with equipment setup and gameplay instructions.
- Monitor and maintain cleanliness and safety standards in entertainment areas.
- Handle transactions and maintain accurate records of sales.
- Collaborate with maintenance staff to address any issues or repairs in the Eddie Elias Bowling Alley.
Welcome Center Specialist
- Greet and welcome guests and visitors to the Jean Hower Taber Student Union.
- Provide accurate information and directions regarding campus facilities, events, and resources.
- Assist internal and external clients with inquiries and requests related to the Student Union.
- Maintain a professional and helpful demeanor while handling inquiries in person, via phone, or email.
- Keep the Welcome Center organized and stocked with necessary supplies.
Qualifications:
■ Must be in good standing at The University of Akron
■ Must be enrolled full time at the University (summer availability preferred)
■ Minimum 2.0 GPA
■ Able and willing to work at least 10 -29 hours per week
■ Friendly, enthusiastic, and self-motivated student
■ Possess basic computer skills
Conditions:
■ May be exposed to a densely populated space
■ May be exposed to fumes, dust and heights
■ May be required to work various hours
■ May be required to work unsupervised
