The Human Resources Division (HRD) partners with CDPH’s programs and management to provide guidance and consultative services on Human Resources matters that are necessary for the Department to carry out its mission to deliver quality public health services. The mission of HRD is to support CDPH in attracting, hiring, and retaining quality employees.

Job Description and Duties

 

This position supports CDPH’s mission and strategic plan by providing general support to the Payroll and Benefit Services Unit (PBSU), Units A and B.

The Student Assistant performs a range of administrative and technical tasks that contribute to the effective operation of payroll and personnel services. Tasks include, but are not limited to, reviewing and auditing timesheets and leave balances; preparing, organizing, and maintaining Official Personnel Files (OPFs); redacting confidential information; and assisting with the creation and revision of forms and documents. The Student Assistant also supports the development and maintenance of tracking systems, logs, and databases for activities such as leave balances, license expirations, and accounts receivable. Additional duties include managing departmental inboxes, routing requests to appropriate staff, and assisting with file purging in accordance with records retention policies.

The incumbent works under close supervision of the Staff Services Manager I (SSM I) of Payroll and Benefit Services Unit.

 

This non-tenured intermittent position will be limited to working up to 1,500 hours in a 12-consecutive month period.

  • Be proficient in the use of various computer word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications (ie. Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and/or Outlook) and willing to learn new technological tools and to incorporate them in daily tasks.
  • Demonstrate tactfulness and ability to relay complex or sensitive information to others, provide exceptional customer service in a professional manner.
  • Experience working independently and cooperatively with others. 
  • Possess strong organizational and time management skills, with excellent attention to detail.
  • Ability to prioritize and work well under pressure to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to reason logically, analyze data, and recommend solutions.
  • Demonstrate ability to follow directions, protocols, and procedures.
  • Interest in human resources, I/O psychology, statistical methodologies, or closely related fields, particularly focused on human resource management and payroll.
