Job Title: Executive Director of News Publications 

Location: Pawnee City, NE

Employment Type: Full-Time

Reports To: Board of Directors

Salary Range - $50,000-$75,000

 

 

About the Role:

We’re looking for a skilled and community-driven Executive Director of News Publications to lead operations of the Pawnee Republican — Nebraska’s longest running weekly news publication and first non-profit print newspaper. This is a unique opportunity to serve as both the editorial and operational leader—overseeing print and digital content, managing staff and freelancers, handling financial responsibilities including payroll and budget, and reporting directly to our Board of Directors.

As a cornerstone of our rural community, our paper covers local news, politics, events, and issues that matter to our readers. We’re seeking someone who can uphold high journalistic standards while also ensuring the long-term sustainability of the organization.

 

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate with Assistant Editor to ensure adequate and timely coverage of community news for weekly print publication
  • Maintain quality and accuracy by keeping up-to-date with industry standards
  • Supervise and support a small team including office manager, reporters & freelancers 
  • Engage with the community; attend public meetings and local events
  • Oversee website and social media content; grow digital content
  • Manage print and digital advertising
  • Oversee all financial operations: budget, payroll, accounts payable and accounts receivable 
  • Report regularly to the Board of Directors on managerial and financial matters
  • Support fundraising, grants, and donor engagement with the Board
  • Other duties as needed

 

 


 

Qualifications:

  • Associates in Business, Media, Journalism or related degree.
  • 3–5+ years of leadership experience
  • At least 1 year of relevant media experience
  • Or some combination of above
  • Strong writing and organizational skills
  • Knowledge of budgeting and basic financial management
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office
  • Deep appreciation for local news and non-profit mission-driven work

 

 

Preferred Skills:

  • Small-town or community newsroom experience
  • Experience with payroll or small business/non-profit financials
  • Grant writing or fundraising experience
  • Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Acrobat)
  • Quickbooks
