Advisory Building Performance Intern

We are seeking a passionate intern to join our Advisory Building Performance Team on a full-time basis during summer 2026. This role can be based in Boston, New York, or Washington, D.C.!

Your next role

As an intern on our Advisory Building Performance Team, you will work on energy and whole-life carbon analysis for multi-scaled projects including high-performance buildings, campus, and cities, including projects featuring net-zero energy and carbon, Living Building Challenge certified projects, LEED certified projects, and calibrated modeling for performance based decarbonization upgrades.  You will work closely with our MEP engineers and sustainability and energy advisory experts and will be technically and creatively challenged on projects that include design support and innovation, strategy and policy development, high-performance strategies, materials research, energy, carbon, water and waste analysis and modelling, etc. From helping shape cities, to adapting infrastructure to deal with climate emergencies, a career at Buro Happold presents the chance to make a difference.

Your key duties:

  • Assist with whole building energy modeling and whole-life carbon analysis for building performance evaluation with industry standard software 
  • Evaluate resource consumption for sites and buildings across energy, water, and waste as well as evaluating GHG emissions and study opportunities to reduce impact and consumption  
  • Research sustainability and urban design strategies, best practices and benchmarks, policy advancements, and other topics   
  • Support building projects pursuing certification using a wide variety of building certification systems such as LEED, WELL, Fitwel, ILFI Zero Carbon, LBC, etc. or clients developing ESG strategies  
  • Help investigate preferred site strategies for stormwater management, external comfort, heat island reduction, improved air and acoustic quality, biodiversity and ecology, enhanced user experience 
  • Assess renewable energy production feasibility and research viable technologies and available funding and incentive opportunities.  
  • Create client PowerPoint presentations, memos, reports, graphics, and presentations

 

Your skills and experience

The successful candidate will be currently pursuing a bachelor or master’s degree in architectural Engineering, energy engineering, mechanical or civil engineering, urban planning & development, environmental engineering, Economics and Real Estate, Public Policy, environmental science or similar. We also expect you to have the following:

  • A passion for sustainability 
  • Experience using Revit, GIS, AutoCAD, or other design tools  
  • Graphic skills and experience using Adobe Creative Suite is preferred 
  • Proven interest in the built environment 
  • Ability to communicate thoughts and technical ideas in an accessible manner 
  • Eagerness to learn and work as part of a multidisciplinary team
