The transportation planning team is seeking intern support for our Transportation Options work. The internship is expected to begin in October of 2025 and carry through the following Spring, with a potential for extension into the Summer if there is interest. Candidates should review the following document for information on the position and application submission process.

Team Description

The City of Eugene Transportation Planning team is part of Public Works Engineering. We work with community stakeholders and agency partners to design transportation projects, develop and implement short and long-range plans, and obtain funding to plan and build street improvements that lead to a complete transportation system. The Transportation Planning team also houses Transportation Options (TO) work, which includes programs and campaigns that encourage the community to walk, bike, take the bus, or engage in other forms of active and/or sustainable transportation. 

Internship Description

This intern position is focused on the Get There program within our TO team. The position will work on the behavior change program of “New Movers”, which encourages new residents of Eugene to explore the city using active transportation as well as “Fun Routes to School” focused on new kids at schools throughout our local school district(s).  The intern will assist the program coordinator on program implementation which will also include some events on weekends, evenings, and early mornings. The supervisor will work with the intern to develop learning goals related to their internship. Intern(s) will learn the following through a variety of internship tasks, including but not limited to:

  • Assisting with the New Movers program including creating information packets, doing outreach at community events, and assisting the coordinator in program execution
  • Researching transportation best practices to inform the refinement or development of city programs
  • Data collection and analysis to support transportation projects and programs, potentially including bicycle/pedestrian usage and parking utilization data collection
  • Assisting with communications content production for online community engagement (including the InMotion e-newsletter, Instagram and Facebook, and website)
  • Learning Smart Cycling skills and techniques
  • Assisting with grant applications to secure funding for transportation projects
  • Other tasks or responsibilities associated with learning outcomes mutually agreed upon by the intern and internship supervisor

The intern will receive support and guidance in the completion of these tasks, including weekly check-ins with their supervisor, regular check-ins with other transportation planning and transportation options staff, opportunities to attend trainings and webinars related to the subject of the intern’s work, and adequate review/feedback on work products. 

 

Internship candidates should be prepared to primarily work in-person, both at the office and in the field during community engagement events. Opportunity for a hybrid schedule may be available depending on equipment availability. The Transportation Planning Team is located on the 2nd floor of 180 W. 8th Avenue. Motor vehicle parking is not provided, but the intern(s) will have access to a locked bike cage and a bike share membership. The downtown bus station is a six minute walk away.
